What are the practical uses of a self hosted LLM? Is it actually possible to approach the likes of Claude or one of the other big ones on your own hardware for a reasonable budget? I don’t know if this is something that’s actually worth it

I’m wondering how the undergrad CS course is as an experienced dev and why you decided to do that? I have been a software developer for 5 years with an EE degree, and as I do more software engineering and less EE I feel like I am missing so

I’m not sure such a prediction is valid in a world post Pax Americana.

The spec only has the power it does because of the market share of Google’s browser though. More people using independent browsers means less power by google to single-handedly control the spec.

Even in the US, every major city has overnight bus services. I live in Seattle and have taken the half hourly to hourly bus home at 3am before. It's wild to me that Tokyo has none.

Just curious, are you based in the Puget sound? I'm in Seattle so it would be a funny coincidence.

My day job is OpenTripPlanner work, so I absolutely love to see this. I've long thought about what a RAPTOR engine would look like written in Rust. So cool that you've done it. You should share this in the OTP Gitter chat if you h

Depends heavily on the city too. I think this kind of thing is more accepted in NYC and LA with big immigrant communities from countries with more informal economies, but in Seattle it gets shut down quickly.

Is using something other than XCode viable? I'd love to do more with swift but I hate that IDE.

> If you build expensive stuff on the property you generally pay more. This is not Land Value Tax. Georgism is an argument against this concept of taxing based on what you do with the land.

That's just not true. The most exported high speed train is the Siemens Velaro which has motors along the whole train. And multiple units are very common in regional and suburban trains, S Bahn style services.

Also, a lot of older people don't want big houses, and having easy access to amenities and socialization is more important than having extra empty bedrooms.

At least in my circles, unless it's like a first date, everyone is paying for their own meals. My girlfriend and I put receipts on the fridge and then reconcile them every so often.

Something I think you're missing here is that when the bridge collapses, cars can no longer drive across it until a new bridge is built, so the inconvenience is almost certainly much worse than if they'd just closed it for mainten

The way I see this is that democracy is extremely susceptible to tools that can change public opinion en masse. This of course applies to Western social media as much as TikTok, and I'd love to see regulation around all social media al

NYC is one of the densest cities in the world... much denser than many places that use scooters. I guess because the transit is so good?

I pay taxes on every purchase which are used to fund public transit, but I still pay per use. I don't see why it isn't fair to also charge a usage fee on cars so that drivers feel the more immediate costs of a choice to drive some

I don't think you've received a good reply to the congestion part of your comment. The most poorly understood urban planning concept by the general public is the idea of induced demand. Usually this is applied to freeway expansion

In NYC and even other cities you really aren't forced to have a car, that's a huge generalization borne out of much more suburban areas. I live in Seattle and myself and many friends don't have cars, yet we get on just fine.
