People do Other Things™ in front of their laptops... Imagine that you never did anything in a certain room of your house except sit quietly. Are you saying that you’re okay with anyone standing outside that room staring into it at anytime?

r/cscareerquestions is pretty good, though sometimes a bit too salary and BigN-focused (like Blind). All the sports-related ones, including r/nba and r/nfl, are top-notch.

That kind of work is more on the order of seconds - not minutes. And it obviously requires a service-side component (push notifications) while this doesn’t.

I've gone insane. I thought this was a bunch of links supporting the argument that the word 'data' is plural.

One of the things I did with Octal [1] a while back was experiment with different title/subtitle combinations, noting where my app landed in the search results for 'hacker news' for each variation. Then I picked the one that

What B&M store lets you freely grab a $2000+ laptop and bring it to checkout on your own?

I’ve never been worried about being fired for something. Not everyone makes huge fireable mistakes.

I do not. Window’s built-in stuff and plain macOS are very good these days. I’m not very convinced that third party anti-virus software provides much additional value. Would love to hear an expert’s thoughts on this subject!

It’s not easily reproducible in Seattle any more. The housing market has flattened over the past year or so. Back before 2018, properties would easily go up 20% a year.

I agree with you, but cars have optional packages for warning lights for lane changes and automatic braking. It’s not that hard to imagine.

I’d say allow at least 3 months overlap between releasing the JSON API and killing the Firebase API. 6+ months would be ideal. Lots of apps need updating!

That would be incredible. Please give substantial warning before taking down the Firebase API though!

Any plans to update the official Hacker News API? I’d love more features, such as ability to reply and upvote, but more importantly, the API currently requires using a really old version of Firebase SDK. The rest API is an alternative, bu

I’m surprised by this article. Most people seem to agree that the the metro systems of NYC, Philadelphia, and DC are much better than those of the west coast. LA’s is unusable for most people because there aren’t enough stops. Seattle’s lig

Give proper annual raises to pay people what they’re worth instead of barely keeping up with inflation. After two years, you’re essentially a mid-level engineer and the money you can command is way more than what a junior developer with two

Yup. For me, actually forcing myself to build something and not just follow a simple tutorial step-by-step is where the real learning is. You can feel yourself getting better every time you Stack Overflow something.
