This. It's just silly to throw data away. Who knows when you might need to transcode?

It can - it has supported RIFF INFO from the start, and ID3 support exists. If software writers choose to not extract metadata from WAVs that's up to them... but I guess it amounts to the same thing if you only want to use software tha

Arguably there doesn't need to be a de facto standard, because there's a de jure one: RIFF INFO. But anyway, if you're going to do WAV tagging (and remember software support remains poor) most people are using ID3.

Indeed. And practically it does become important for example when transcoding later...

I broadly agree - but maybe the GP's issue was how this looks on a page - with all the generated links. Maybe if you had the pages, but the list of links was less intrusive it might be better. But granted, the SEO for these generated p

This. Funny how "WAVs don't have metadata" has become such a meme. What is really meant is "software doesn't support WAV metadata". This has changed over the past five years or so, though.

I operate a service that does this: https://asti.ga/ Happy to answer any questions. I also wrote up some other example services a while back: - https://www.blisshq.com/music-library-management-blog/2021

It's definitely an app-level thing. About album art specifically I tried hacking around a bit, but when the software itself is buggy you're a bit limited in what you can do https://www.blisshq.com/music-library-man

To be fair, the parent said "impractical to navigate using a common stereo UI" which doesn't have much to do with the capaciousness of a library, more about how easy it is to browse/search/find/choose what you

My service, Astiga, does this. You can upload your files to any supported cloud storage service, pair it with Astiga, then play either via the Web, our apps or any other client that supports Subsonic. https://asti.ga/

An alternative is to use a cloud based player, and stream music from a cloud storage service. Disclaimer: I run this service: https://asti.ga/ I've written up some alternatives at https://www.blisshq.com

That's not necessarily the reason people choose FLAC. Some people, myself included, simply feel it's "wrong" to throw data away. Remember you might need that data later for re-encoding or otherwise changing the audio.

Got me thinking. I wonder how much scope there is to build apps for platforms like Spotify which are built around a given use case. For example - for people that prefer listening to albums. Or people that only care about political podcasts.

Yeah, I see your point. I was making an assumption that audio podcasts have a different... usage profile? or user flow?... to album listening. I might have been distracted by "podcast" which I tend to associate with the spoken wor

But wait - as soon as you start adding audio podcasts, that's a different use case, and the original UX that it looks like the Doppler author concentrated on and refined for people that buy music is compromised. And then we add this,

Agree about different uses of metadata. But I don't really understand your point about butchering data and KV stores. It just seems to me the author is opinionated about (what they see as) the most important entity types to organise th

I'm not really sure I'd recommend ID3. It's the worst of both worlds: constrained by the limitations of the de facto storage mechanisms and overly prescribed and frankly ignored by a lot of software, bar the main fields.

One thing to consider is what you really mean when you say music metadata, because you didn't mention where you want to use or store this metadata. Are you talking about released music, or simply information about the work? Publishing

In addition to the Handbrake suggestions, you can use HandbrakeCLI if you're on a headless media server. Before, I used to use dvdbackup then ffmpeg for DVD ripping. I found HandbrakeCLI did a better job, though, of handling errors in
