Great post. As your speculation hints, maybe WebOS is something to watch for the future, but at this point, it's probably financially a waste of time to develop for it. A lot of chips have to fall into place before that changes. "Ballmer wi

This article is kind of backwards to me. Dropbox has an API, and Amazon didn't release one with their Cloud Drive. It's also kind of silly to say that Amazon has mastered storage, but give Dropbox no credit. They obviously have data storage

Yeah this is something that happens a lot at WWDC. Every year Apple threatens to check IDs at the door, but they never do that I have seen besides at registration.

Wow. I guess I'll be at home this year crying myself to sleep. The quickness at which this sold out prompts a few questions: 1. I guess only small development houses are going this year because most big companies can't get purchasing approv

I agree as well. I wasn't suggesting that's all it takes, but rather, that was the missing ingredient for me. I think different people are missing different ingredients to success, and that was the one that I was missing.

It's funny you say it's obvious. The whole elastic network concept wasn't obvious to me at all until they explained it. It's somewhat engenius in my opinion, but maybe I'm slow and this idea is obvious. Like I said though, I think the conce

Jokes aside, I bounced the concept for colors.com off of some people and they didn't like the idea of automatically sharing pictures they take with people who are nearby. While there is something interesting to this concept, I think it coul

Yes I did outsource. It was a huge website with a lot of bells and whistles (this was my first mistake)... At the time, I was a C++ guy trying to get into the web, so I hired an outsourced designer and then hired a php guy in India to imple

It actually happened immediately. I only have one real competitor, and my product is superior, and I still haven't overtaken them. That's part of what I learned from this. They were making enough that if I just took 5% of their income I cou

I've been programming for a long time, so I don't think it had anything to do with productive programming. In fact, each attempt was less work than the previous. The thing that I didn't understand is that being successful in business has ve

Like someone mentioned, I don't want to increase my competition, so I'm not going to get into the details, but I'll say that I started doing consulting after work in 2007 to bootstrap my own project. I had absolutely no business background.

This article comes off as very whiny. It may decrease competition, but that doesn't mean it creates a monopoly.

You should also consider how fast the market is growing too. Maybe it's only 1% of Apple's profits, but that's a lot considering it was non-existent 2 years ago. Perhaps in another 2 years it will be 5% of Apple's profit. That's incredible

The one point I do agree with is that PG is probably the worst person to ask if there is a bubble in startup tech right now because he has more than almost anyone to gain from high valuations. I understand Paul wants to be unbiased, but he

When I said "ecosystem" I meant a modern mobile platform with all the pieces needed to compete in the current market. Yes, they don't have mobile users right now, but they will be able to graft users from other markets that they own. The ph

Quality is definitely lacking compared to the App Store in a number of ways. I wonder if the poor quality stems from the fact that Android is probably not even paying for itself internally at google and they don't properly account for all t

I have liked OKCupid's posts in the past, but this one is clearly propaganda. There's a pretty obvious flaw in this argument: "It turns out you are 12.4 times more likely to get married this year if you don't subscribe to Match.com." The da

While I don't doubt racket means less lines of code, if I rewrote one of my older c++ projects in c++, I think I could cut down at least half of the code. Maybe more depending on the project. Rewrites have hindsight that you didn't have the
