> Because the web is meant for documents first, not applications. Where have you been for the past decade? The web is the world's largest app platform, and it's not going away any time soon.

This image I made back in 2009 illustrates perfectly why having limited serifs in a sans-serif typeface can increase comprehension: http://i.imgur.com/Jgj17qR.jpg

What you're suggesting is that designers limit themselves to the what? < 100? professionally designed type families that are freely available? Like it or not, most of the open source fonts in the world are amateurish at best, hide

A farmer's right to privacy, my ass. This law is big agriculture, plain and simple. These Ag-Gag laws are a farce.

Am I the only one who prefers the Vector Magic versions? They're like mini Picassos.

I should note, I tend to have a LOT of tabs open (like 20–70, because I have a sickness). In Chrome, each one gets its own slice of CPU, and it gets way up there. My lap, and my potential for creating future children, much prefer Firefox.

Chrome is the only app I have that will consistently turn my macbook into a 1000˚ clothes iron. That's probably the #1 reason I still use Firefox for general computing.

Ha ha, that's what makes me a Pythonista and you not one :) I like the idea because it (presumably) forces conformant html. The end result that gets sent to the user should be compressed and minified anyhow.

I've never seen Jade before. Python + Jade + CoffeeScript + SASS (original syntax) = No more braces evar!

Bottle or Flask are really simple microframeworks. Define your path, define your function, done. There are similar things for other scripting languages like Ruby and Node, but I'm not familiar with them.

I've ran two hackathons, and I keep turning back to bottle.py + mongodb on Heroku. It's the fastest to spin up and modify by a long stretch. Give MongoDB as much gruff as you want for whatever reason you're predisposed to hat

Hold a compass straight in front of you. Now walk due east without re-orienting yourself. That is in essence what you are doing if you use the N star as a guide, but insist on orienting the map with east on top.

Thanks. How much of that could we do during the original design phase?

Great read. Seems to me that the trend of signing people to a specific contract term limit (2 or 3 years @ $X + benes) would solve some of this. When the contract is due for re-negotiating, there's none of this uncertainty over compens

We cache everything, but this simply takes care of not having to think about it. It might not be the best method, but it sure is the least troublesome/least cognitive load when things hit the fan.

This is exactly the method my company uses when one of the stories on our website is getting hammered by Reddit. I manually wget the rendered template, save it to a templates/static/ dir, and serve it directly. Works like a charm.

More articles like this please, because I have to convince other people that I'm working with that my design isn't broken because it doesn't have social media buttons slathered all over it. I have always hated it. From a UX

I haven't. I've never used SASS directly on the production server, I just run Compass on dev and push the compressed css to a cdn or media server. You might want to look into the C implementation? https://github.com
