Why do some people write the dollar sign after the number? Similarly, why do some people write the percent sign before the number? I initially thought it might be a locale thing (like swapping commas and decimal points), but I've seen

It seems to be a particular phenomenon of the Go community that they want to reimplement everything in Go.

What do they need supervision of? Perhaps they're things they wouldn't have been expected to do on their own a few thousand years ago anyway. Perhaps they would have had an easier time in an early, small human community.

Off-topic, but: > Full-page screenshots. Take a screenshot of the entire page, from the top of the viewport to the bottom. I'm surprised to see the Chrome developers not know what 'viewport' means.

It was recently pointed out by a prominent member of the community that developers should stop naming personal assistants after women, because it's not a woman's job to help you out. Does the same apply to this? Should the author

Do we have to have all these scathing headlines telling us what we do and don't know? I mean, I've been doing this a while. I do know a thing or two, and I'm hardly the only one. I'm surprised ACM stoops to this level of

What do you mean by "AT&T syntax"? Neither 68000 nor SPARC use it, because it's an x86 thing. Do you really mean "operand order"? There's more to an assembly language syntax than just the order of the opera

How does such an insignificant release (new themes, some bugfixes) of a product become the top story on HN?

How much time does that actually save? I find that for any given task, I spend far more time reading and thinking than I do typing, and of the time spent typing, most of it is spent typing arguments.

> Facebook is not about keeping in touch with friends You are mistaken. I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends. It's a pretty epic level of arrogance to try and tell me what I use it for.

Yes, exactly. That's pretty much the reason I never really got into Google+; most of my friends weren't on there, and didn't care to be, so I was just reading a lot of the same things I could read on Twitter -- public posts b
