"You have to do basic science on your libraries to see how they work, trying out different inputs and seeing how the code reacts." Is this not an atrocity, to be fought to the last bullet?" I think it's an acceptance of reality. There is a

(define (deriv f) (define (f-prime x) (/ (- (f (+ x dx)) (f x)) dx)) f-prime) jeez, I wish it was easy to do that in Python. Python's main limitation, IMSHO, is lack of homoiconicity. Yes, I sa

Who cares if your clock slows down say 20% by 50? Think how easy it is to optimize any program by 20%. It's irrelevant. Much more important is what software you're running. Like other posters here, I struggled with things in my 'prime'

The main problem with psyco is lack of 64-bit support. While a new psyco would be nice, what really would make sense is a boost-like tophat on rpython so you can drop into it and compile your performance-critical routines. Today people do

After the first, it gets easier. If it's 3 or more, call it a layoff, which sounds better. Be respectful, but don't get into a debate. I disagree with the article's recommendation to outline all the reasons you're letting someone go. I

Reminds me of a russian proverb my co-founder attributed to his great-uncle: "The first time you get hit by a train, it really hurts. The second time, it still hurts. By the third time, you start to get used to it."

My impression has always been that Google has a "systemic hiring problem", as well as some deep organizational problems that make it very hard to get true productivity out of their workforce. 18 hour days are the last resort of bad manager
