I’m 100% with you. Including all these legacy soon to be dead ports (seriously, an sd reader?) feels like a big regression

no. apart from loud voices on HN, basically everyone is living in a wireless world because its better in almost every way. i was personally a long holdout on wired, but modern wireless (bose qc30s and now airpods) are so much more useable i

Why would they prioritize stored procedures ? They’re pretty much seen as an anti-pattern by most people today, outside of very niche use cases

I read that it wasn’t the logistics of sending them out that’s challenging; rather it’s trying to collect them back from the 100k+ pharmacies, hospitals, distribution sites etc in the US, most with poor records. The us mounted such a large

I understand your point now, thanks! I agree somewhat; if all you changed tomorrow in the USA was to make voting compulsory, you would immediately see redoubled efforts in purging rolls etc. I agree I probably overstated, there would still

Are you Australian? I’m asking because I’m not aware of of that(very American) tactic being employed in Australia. Imho the requirement of voting moves the window of what’s acceptable in terms of voter rolls - I can’t think of one time I’ve

As an Australian living in America for 10 years you absolutely nailed it; compulsory voting effectively prevents what is the worst part of American democracy - the unceasing efforts to stop people voting . Plenty of other bs, but at lea

I find that very difficult to believe, as it’s very illegal to ask about disabilities during hiring. VMware as a large company with many lawyers and hr people would of course know the rules so I’d be shocked if this story is true.

You wouldn’t. If you’re planning on doing anything with a large user count(millions+), putting it all in the db is guaranteed terrible pain later on. Replicas are not the answer. But if you’re doing a LoB app for hundred of users you get a

haha yeah, noones going to go back to subversion. The sum of the pain of the SVN problems solved by git is much larger than the slight pain of using git for a mono-repo.

FYI RDS aurora engines do not use EBS (instead a custom replicated log based storage layer) and thus do not have this iops limitation. They are extremely fast.

Foreign key constraints are a waste of effort for most at-scale web apps. They guard against a subset of problems that aren’t actually problems (orphaned rows) at a putative cost (for the db)

I may be reading it wrong, but from your link it says 76% and 79% (pzifer & moderna) disease prevention against 351&p1. Which is still great. Note that’s just infection, the data shows the vaxxes have near 100% chance of preventing

. Singapore is at 31% one shot(from your link), US is at 47 and rising. Of course you would still be able to get spikes in cases at only 31%, that’s expected. The mRNA vaccines are stupendously effective at stopping all variants thus far.

I don’t think anyone trusts the Indian government numbers; they are downplaying, lying, and just overwhelmed. It will take a long time probably before before we get a real accounting for deaths, but everything I’ve read points to at least
