"2. Assume a hacker can in turn be significantly more productive working for themselves." This premise is fundamentally flawed for one simple reason. When you are working for someone else, you just come to work, sign in, and start coding. T

I've found the best way to get a discount at the Apple store is to know/befriend a specialist there. They're more than happy to kick a discount your way(after all they aren't paid on commission) if they know you. The $100 off my MacBook pro

iSteve is a horribly unimaginative title for Steve Jobs' biography. Frankly I thing the second half if the title is better. "The book of Jobs: The authorized biography of an American original."

He forgot one big one "he who names the price first, loses." While he was a very capable engineer, it took an experienced sales professional to extract real value for the software he was selling. Frankly, I'd have given her a HUGE bonus for

You have to define "worth" before you can answer this. For me, I chose to get the MBP with the standard hard drive because it offered so much more storage. My computer has 2X the storage yours does and while I admit that there is a noticeab

While I wish him the best of luck, I'm not sure of the timing of his decision. After all, it's not as if people won't need help learning new things next year. Plus, he's got great traction so it's unlikely he'll be friendstered before he gr

Every time someone pulls out that tired Edison quote I'm reminded of a response Nikola Tesla gave when he heard it: “If Edison had a needle to find in a haystack, he would proceed at once with the diligence of the bee to examine straw after

I am VERY introverted and I've actually read the book this post mentions. I have always had a question about it: Why is it printed in blue? As if introverts are so delicate reading black ink would somehow scar us?

I'm sorry, are articles highlighting the erosion of your freedoms off putting? If you don't like it, go somewhere else. Fark has lovely discussions on it's page.

This is the cycle of a new opportunity playing itself out. First the store was announced, and everyone flocked there to put up apps regardless of quality and everyone made great money. Then as the app store grew, only apps that were actuall

I think the level of sleep I need depends on what I'm working on. When I was working on a business with my friends, I'd only sleep for 4 hours or so a day. Whereas when I was working a job I hated, I was exhausted unless I slept 9-10 hours

I'd need about $30mm. At that amount, I can have an income above the US median off t-bills alone. Having said that, I'm sure if and or when I actually have that kind of money, I probably wouldn't be so conservative with it, but that's the b

The problem I have with this idea is that Apple made such a big deal last year about the fact that the camera on the iPhone 4 was backlit. Presumably, the company making those image sensors patented the technology, and wouldn't license it t

Has anyone combined the Kinect with iOS yet? That plus the HDMI out from the new iPad to a big screen tv would equal epicness on an unprecedented scale. In fact, I'd actually pay more for that than I did for the iPad itself. Get to work, Ap

Once I decided to start a new career as a developer, the first thing I bought was a new MacBook pro. It's great. Keep in mind that the computer I'd had before this was a Dell Latitude from 2006. I bought it back in 2008 and while it worked
