Does it scale down? I can see two floors of an office building making a (very expensive) apartment but what about a cheap 1 bedroom? In "office mode", the office unit would be < 50% office, with most of the floor plan as bathro

I'm sure there are buildings which are built to both codes. In the general case, there is significant costs in time and money to convert an office to a legal apartment unit.

You can't just rent out an office as an apartment. There are large costs associated with retrofitting the office space to be up to code for a residential unit. These retrofits would also likely lower the properties value as an office s

Wouldn't you know it, the mercedes door handles from 1985 used slotted holes[1]. As much as you like them, Mercedes cannot transcend the technical abilities of the time. [1] https://www.ebay.com/itm/174693656016

VC money is drying up, and many of these startups are going to fail because they don't have any sort of foundation as a business. They don't have a product people are willing to pay for.

The emphasis on "persistent union membership" makes me skeptical. If they are excluding anyone who spent time unemployed, or switched industry (to one not unionized), that massively skews the data. The study could just as easily p

There's really no benefit to lithium batteries in a car. They perform much worse in the cold, and they are more expensive. You don't cycle your car battery 100-0-100 so the fact that the useable capacity of lead batteries is lower

95% efficient gas furnaces are the norm for newer houses[1]. Getting electricity out of gas is fundamentally harder than getting heat out of it. [1] https://iwae.com/resources/articles/95-afue-gas-furnace-work...

"high efficiency" turbines are not all that efficient. Burning gas releases 100% of the available energy as heat. Converting that gas to electricity is << 50% efficient. You also lose ~5% just transmitting the electricity to

A top comment on that video puts it into perspective well. That whole setup can store the energy of a single AA battery. He would be so much better off just charging a cheap battery. All the money wasted on pumps, wood, barrel, pipes....

There's a big difference between studying the API and not having an API . It's ridiculous that you have to call an unexported symbol for something as basic and fast locking.

This may be a factor for brand new devs, but everyone who uses vim already has it setup, by definition. One time setup cost is a small factor in choosing an editor. Stability and ubiquity are more important IMO.

The easy solution is a single, general deduction. Everyone's first $25k or so is tax free. Everyone pays 10% on every subsequent dollar. Mathematically, this is equivalent to a small UBI.

I think you have the causality backwards. In both cases, the publishers are trying to maximize profit. A movie full of violence won't sell as well in Germany. It isn't want Germans want to go see. Vice versa for Americans and sex.
