I'd frankly rather just support the author directly. They wrote a book, I'm happy to pay for it in some manner and Kindle Unlimited honestly seems like the fairest possible solution, I as a reader aren't required to buy in ad

I read a lot of books. It's pretty much my main source of entertainment. Nobody else came up with something like Kindle Unlimited where you pay a flat fee and read as much as you want instantly. There's entire genres that only exi

All the customers are there and the company has perhaps spent more time than any other figuring out how to sell books to people. They're better at it than everyone else.

We have to assume they have considered this in the past and come to the conclusion it just doesn't work. I suspect tying a purchasing decision to every page visit just leads to people automatically backing out of the page with a very l

We're not exactly tearing everything apart to combat piracy nowadays even though piracy still exists, so I'm not sure exactly what it reveals other than attitudes change?

Well no shit. And the people who block ads are greedy and don't want to pay anything for the service, they have a delusional expectation it should be free for them forever.

Ahh, didn't know that. Still for probably 99% of the people who youtube it has always had ads given how small the userbase would've been 17-18 years ago.

If it were that small of a number on ad blockers, they probably wouldn't be spending the effort to counter the blockers.

I don't think youtube has ever been ad free? Yet an awful lot of people feel entitled to it being so.

The bigger risk frankly is that people watch so little they no longer pay the license fee because it makes no financial sense to do so. I haven't watched terrestrial tv in a decade or more, pretty sure there's a generation of UK k

I am glad to see the cyberpunk future of hackers impersonating government agencies in order to pump and dump digital currency has finally arrived.

I think your $400 a year might be a bit of an outlier. Personally I would say the $140 I'm spending per year via KU is probably more than I was spending before. If you multiply this out by the number of people with KU subscriptions it

Honestly Royal Road is a treasure. It's the only site where I actively click on t he ads because the ads are all for new stories and there's a decent chance I'll like one.

It's pulp. If you made it disappear the people reading it wouldn't magically start reading "the good stuff", they'd move onto something else suitably mindless in another medium.

I suspect a younger generation of authors coming up now will almost exclusively self publish. In the niches of fantasy I read there are no traditionally published authors any more, they all monetise via patreon, kindle unlimited and audible

I don't mind ads, they're not great, but they're not the end of the world either, they paid for a lot of useful services over the years.

I think you're about 5ish years out of date. Most of the sites on cameras, gadgets, games, cars e.t.c. are dead or dying and have been replaced by youtube channels, many of them run by hobbyists.

It's a well understood part of human nature that it's very difficult to charge for something you previously gave away for free. The vast majority of the web has been given away for free by being ad supported, that's never goi

In this circumstance there isn't a price those people would be willing to pay. They simply want the service for free, refuse to pay but are unwilling to come out and say as much, so they use host of justifications to avoid it.
