Yeah, all questions should've gone into a queue for review as the talk was going on. I had to shut off the Q&A; this was just cringeworthy.

I see two options: 1) they're using Hyper-V and exposing a small number of hypercalls to allow for rendering and interaction. 2) they've overloaded the Hyper-V name for a user space sandbox. I'm really hoping for the former,

This is awful logic. What happens if there's another financial downturn, causing you to not be able to sell your car? What happens if the price of oil goes way down, causing the value of Teslas to drop dramatically? If you can't

I think there's a simpler explanation: observation bias. 30 years ago there was more crime, but if it didn't happen in your town or to someone you knew, you were pretty unlikely to hear about it. Now, there's less crime but w

Frankly, that's how you increase your failure rate. If a system fails, you figure out why, figure out any other failure cases that may have been missed, and you fix them. You don't ditch something that largely works, and replace i

How does the overhead scale when you go from, say, having $10k in the pool to $10m? If a service existed that ran a trust where you could put in money and then dictate where your share gets routed, would this overhead keep going up dramati

The reason that protein folding and other large-scale projects (e.g. SETI@Home) work is because there's enough data to go around. I think that these projects are likely bound by the fairly small bits of data they have available. If we

I imagine that a large part of this is simply a lack of interest on the part of tech folks. Many fields of biology need people with coding backgrounds, but tech people are often completely unaware of this or (in my case, most of the time) h

I don't think that the direction of the discussion necessarily imbues the value of an HN post. I also don't think that the skilled trades themselves were the focus of the post; rather, the focus was on what the Koch Brothers did

You don't need to be concerned about Mercury's day unless they're on the surface, essentially. You do need to be concerned with the earth's, and their positions relative to the sun.

According to Wikipedia, the world's average energy consumption is 12.3Tw. Given that the Earth is gets 1366 W/m² of solar power at 149,597,870km, this means Mercury gets 9190 W/m² at 57,910,000km. Plugging these together, t

That's my thought. I counted about 12 seconds between initial explosion and the sound hitting the camera, which puts it at roughly 2.88km away. Edit: Helps if I multiply properly. 12 seconds * 340m/s == 4080m.

Chaining this with some form of SMS/MMS bug (a la Stagefright) would make this unbelievably powerful. That's essentially the worst case scenario I can imagine for mobile security.
