How about this to start? "How To Design A Good API and Why it Matters" -- a great talk by Joshua Bloch (also the author of "Effective Java") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAb7hSCtvGw

You can. For example, this one by Wacom: http://www.amazon.com/Bamboo-Stylus-for-iPad-CS100K/dp/B004V... (Disclaimer: I haven't tried it yet. Would be interesting to hear others' feedback.)

Seconded! When I saw the title of this post, I hoped more people would chime in about their experiences outsourcing. At this moment I used one contractor from odesk (for some audio recording) and it went very well (beginner's luck?). Hoping

The current situation is somewhat unfair to the indiscrete / non-tech-savvy consumer since they might buy an Android phone without understanding the differences from the iOS ecosystem. At least several of my friends did. "They're about the

While some toys can definitely be attributed as luxury (you don't really need that iPad), I can say that my i7 Macbook Air made me a significantly happier developer. Incredibly fast for everything I do, be it Xcode or Photoshop. Check. Lo

You haven't mentioned how your side project is doing. Have you seen reached any milestones/small successes? Is it something you can monetize, like a SaaS website (as staunch wrote below) or perhaps an iPhone app? If you are already spending

As a single indie dev, I couldn't agree more. It can be a long road! Games (as opposed to say, utilities) are challenging because of the additional art/sound/creative requirements, IMO. And I think one important reason for why > 1 is be

Self-learning has worked well for me so far. Within reasonable time, you should be able to do most typical tasks (i.e. within the context of Linux, do things like install new packages from a repo or from source, configure Apache/Nginx/etc.,

Taken within the context of HN audience, this is generally poor advice. I'm not sure why it is being upvoted other than for the discussion itself. Don't scrounge those $9 Netflix dollars, and don't skip your coffee. Don't even spend countle

This is a great video. For one, it showcases SJ's confidence in deprecating technologies for the benefit of newer and better things. It also underscores the importance of being able to translate tech "pieces" into compelling products. I'm a

Love the concept, and a very clean design. I'd make 2-3 haikus more prominent on your landing page in a slightly bigger font and toward the top of the page. Right now this valuable space is taken up by the logo which doesn't add much value/

FWIW (see my post above recommending Air), I also tend to keep 20+ Chrome tabs open at a time, along with Xcode, Photoshop, and occasionally Eclipse. Always snappy. As far as I can tell, it performs better than my previous MBP. It seems lik

I've been using a Macbook Air since last winter, and this year upgraded to the 2011 model (13", highest specs.) I can't stress highly enough how happy it made me as a developer. The Air is light, and so it's easy to bring with me just about

Something definitely has to be said about having the right environment. If you're around people who are also doing hacking, this will help you immensely, even if they're not working on the same projects as you.

Perhaps they can try another pattern (now seen on TechCrunch.com). Initially, the logo/header is sized normally. As you scroll down to the point where the header would disappear, it shrinks to a smaller height. Seems weird at first, but mak

Another classic example would be the "tone" sounds you hear when entering digits on a modern cell phone. Completely cosmetic, but probably just makes sense for consumers. And there's just something pleasant about hearing those tones rather

Shameless plug. I always have trouble waking up. Since the Mac App Store came out this year, I've been working on a simple alarm clock app called "Mornings" to do just this (play iTunes or custom MP3s). It actually uses AppleScript to tell

Many restaurants in China do in fact have such a set of buttons at every table. As an added optimization, wait staff there typically use some kind of mobile devices to order food instead of using paper. I haven't seen many other countries,
