I actually don't think the title is confusing. It makes perfect sense. I wrote elsewhere on this thread that the author basically chose to tilt the balance towards work because the other side, life, wasn't working out.

Exactly my thoughts. It is, in fact, darkly funny that this post is titled around "work-life balance", because the author is basically saying "My life stuff wasn't working out so I tilted the scales towards work." I

It's a shame that that incident seems to dog them around on HN so much. I don't like what the CEO did in that case either, but I don't think their entire company should sink due to that one incident

This has always been a beautiful draw of the BEAM ecosystem for me, but during my exploration of the space I found that most people were deploying BEAM applications the same way as any other, say, Rails app, and I couldn't find a "

That was the recent incident, yeah. Records + Pattern Matching led to many saying you no longer need Kotlin, even here on HN.

I've heard some variation of "$java_feature will make $language obsolete" for years now, most recently wrt kotlin/scala, and it's never held true. It's great for the people who use Java, but there are tons of r

I can second your experience of using ocaml-lsp-server - I use it with VSCode and it's been incredibly pleasant with lots of active and ongoing work to make it even better. Gone are the days when writing OCaml basically meant using ema

Perfectly acceptable! But, I don't have high standards. My reason for using an M1 MBP is mostly the insane battery life.

I can't speak to GP's claims about performance because I never used Docker Desktop, but I use lima [1] with colima [2] as my docker host. It's dead easy to set up: `brew install colima` followed by `colima start`. 1: https:&

Long lead times can make people hold off on the purchase. IME it’s pretty rare for someone to see an ETA of ~4+ weeks and still go ahead with a purchase.

No, and I think you're misunderstanding how Java optionals work. They're just like any ML-type language's option type - a box which can either have something or nothing. You choose if you want an exception. Map will only run

Yes, basically this. HN basically has one of these threads hit the frontpage every day, and they're always from one side of the culture war. No points for guessing which of course, as the author of this piece is an out and out homoph

Java doesn't have pattern matching (not until the most recent releases, to be pedantic) and the Optional type has absolutely made my programming safer. You don't need pattern matching if you can use functions like `map` and `orEls

Ok, that makes sense. I assume you have a good reason for avoiding WSL2, because with WSL2 I've had ok perf if psql was also running on wsl2. Otherwise, you can rent a cheap DO box, or even get one of the free Oracle Cloud ARM instance

Why not use Rails? The book "Data Visualization Toolkit" [1] does exactly that: it uses Rails for AR's ease of use, not because they need a heavy server. If you need a UI instead of the CLI, you can use ActiveAdmin, or use Dj
