I doubt we'll have a lockdown. Almost all the news coming out says that Omicron cases are milder, so despite the high infection rate governments might decide to not risk hurting public opinion by going into lockdown again. Part wishful

OT for nix, but that's an interesting approach to building an organisation on the internet. They seem to have a good sense of cohesion despite being just a group of people with common interests who hang out on an IRC and are distribute

India is thankfully untouched because Black Friday falls after the biggest Hindu festival of the year - Diwali. Most people are already shopped out by that point. Also the reason why our big sales are in October.

Yes - sometimes you can go too far in the quest for abstraction. I've seen a ton of over-enterprisey people build gorgeous abstractions with perfect testability and dependency management, only for it to be used only ever in one context

I've found JetBrains IDEs have pretty good Git tooling, and can show you history for selection and viewing complex commit histories. What do you use in GitLens that you find better than IDEA? I'm curious if it is worth making the

I love Ruby but I'd still cautiously take that bet. At the same time, I don't think it's easy to come up with terms for a fair judgment of who wins. What does Crystal being the future of Ruby mean? To me, I think in the spe

I'm repeating myself, but that's so weird. From personal experience, I've only ever thought of the YouTube algorithm as crap. Every time I check YouTube everything there is just irrelevant to me, and the recommendations next

That's super weird. Have you tried to figure out what the difference is? Netflix and the like also have a lot of the features that I can think would cause such a reaction: infinite playback without user input, very little friction from

It's an interesting read despite that IMO. When I first read it as a teen it blew my mind, and over time I read a bunch of critiques that corrected beliefes I'd had based on it, but I still think it was a good read, because even

Every DE has a code editor these days, GNOME has geany and KDE has Kate, and so on. Incidentally, marcan of asahi linux fame primarily uses Kate in his streams, and from what I've seen it's perfectly functional.

Oh sure, I wanted to talk more about the "one codebase" idea - and with the state of FFI being what it is today, if you can pick anything, why pick Dart? is my thinking. And I don't particularly hate Dart. It's fine . I

This. Flutter is fine, but Dart rankles me. I wish they'd used Kotlin for it instead - a much nicer language with cleaner aesthetics.

Sure, you can keep things common with one codebase, but why does that codebase have to be flutter? IMO dart is a pretty meh language, and as others have pointed out flutter doesn't even use native controls. There's tons of options
