You're right, benhurmarcel. My input here has come to nothing, and it wasn't a good input to begin with. I wish there was a retract option.

Not everyone has the time to learn yet another language. Besides, learning a language to understand content like this takes a lot of time. (I speak 4 languages already.)

Authors addendum: This post was a mistake on my part. Please downvote this post. Thank you! I would rather have a retract option, but there is none here on HN. Original post: Apologies to you on behalf of people who made you feel uncomforta

My apologies. Yes that was perhaps a little weird from me. (But I am a socially awkward person anyway. :)) My intention was to inquire why person X came to that conclusion. Many people have different experiences throughout their lives. Some

> Starting with a software renderer is nuts. No, not really. You can write a simplistic ray tracer and rasterizer in about 10 - 50 lines tops: https://github.com/d26900/JamaisVu/blob/main/tests.c Line

Peter Shirley's one is nice too! But he has 2 more: https://gamephysicsweekend.github.io/ And you can do a very simple one in much less than 30 lines in C. ;) Edit: Oops, it was the wrong one... This is the right one:

It's a great book! Thank you for your effort and for making it accessible to people for free!!! Edit: (If I wouldn't be so poor, I would donate to your cause as well.)

I would start with fundamental rendering algorithms first before anything. - Write a software rasterizer - Write a software ray tracer You can do all that without exiting a programming language's standard library. I wrote a simple ray

I think HN would benefit if more people would hop on board from different walks of life (doctors, lawyers, artists, moviemakers, photographers, manual laborers, philosophers, historians, economists ...). So it is good to have you here. All

Python is so cool and old (1991) or let's say "battle-tested". I really like minimalistic languages like C (1972) and Python. It seems like minimalistic languages have higher chances of survival.

That sentiment is shared by a significant amount of people[1][2][3][4], it seems. I am also sympathetic to minimalism in life (owning essentials only) and in many of my (programming) projects (single-header libraries[5], minimal dependencie

With "asset reverse engineering" I meant: recreating the assets from scratch. Just like a painter reproducing another painting.

by d26900 6y ago
Wow, impressive! Can the assets be "reverse engineered" as well? Also, can R* shut this project down? Is there a legal basis for them?

If we had "benevolent monarchs" (riches, people of power) who have always our best interest in mind, I would agree with you. But these "monarchs" aren't benevolent they simply do not care about us other than manipul

Was money always the primary incentive or did you just lose the passion for programming over time?

by d26900 6y ago
Well not quite. I based it on the Stack Overflow developer surveys as well (Tiobe too). Tiobe is basically a measure for how often a language is searched for, if I am not mistaking. Rust for example has a small market share (based on the In

That's an interesting proposition/sentiment. I haven't thought about that. As if "neo-monarchy" (the status quo) is necessary for us "dumb" humans. But there are problems as well with that. Brexit is a goo

Then how would you decide whether a finding/study is valid or not? What is your modus operandi in that case? Is there an algorithm for this (for selecting good studies or for finding the truth)?
