I miss John Siracusa's reviews. This is a fine review, but not a Siracusa Review.

I skipped over the first paragraph as was semi-confused to see "Resist Abstractions" as point #1 in a HN article.

I think there are plenty of startups working on valuable things, but since you mentioned education... Typically, the largest group of students in open online courses like MOOCs are those from privileged backgrounds, like white males, and th

Count me as another sad user...I started using it towards the end of writing my MS thesis, and was bummed to not know of it sooner. The sharing was definitely a good feature, but the overall experience felt thought out, and was enjoyable!

Gosh this is awful. I'm glad Penny was able to get out when she could, but I can't imagine being in that experience. And the marketing...if "wrkriot" is really the new site, this is just sad. The latest post on "Goa

I'd say somewhere in the middle. Disney has gone through some _really_ rough periods both in the '90s and '00s but now they seem to be on a pretty good upswing. Interestingly, it seems like a significant part of that upswing

My understanding is that VP who was championing CDG at SAP left and they didn't have the support they wanted or needed to do research.

I don't think it necessarily needs dismissing... It's basically saying sitting isn't so bad as long as you exercise and take breaks and move. Which...yeah...duh...? This one of the things activity tracking devices are good at

UC Berkeley does accept earmarked donations, but there is a limit to how specific they can be. I'm not sure what that particular level is, to be clear, but I've heard it's above the "it must go to this lab / group &

Yeah, it's designed for perhaps middle-school to high school aged students, and perhaps a bit younger, but also potentially intro university classes. BeetleBlocks is built on top of Snap! (snap.berkeley.edu) which is a re-implementatio

Same as the above, but i have actually pushed code changes from the Github web UI before. I at least appreciate that github gives this option.

Yep, it's an algorithm site authors have no control over. It's definitely useful, but not something to rely on as a dev.

As someone who is visually impaired, I care more about being able to READ the site than I do about nice scrolling. I mean, I like nice scrolling / etc., please have it, but being about to read the content is a prerequisite.

This is the solution... Even 'zoom' on fixed elements as dastardly as it looks is easier to read than text that is too small.

The reader option is awesome when it exists, but there's currently no way to set a site to always enable it. Safari itself makes the determination on a page by page basis. Or at least that used to be the case.

I don't know how much I can say, but 1 section of any class is 10 hours of TA paid time. Period. Doesn't matter if you work less or more. Though, often times, most TA's I know put in far more than their required time.
