The last time I checked the source code, it was filled with horrible unsafe C++. They also re-implement everything whether it is needed or not.

Sure, but that's an order of magnitude better than optical drives. Blu-Ray optical media use feature sizes on the order of 100nm (0.1um) and the read head needs to be able to move in two dimensions to keep it in focus. I repaired a cou

Yeah, the back-compat story for LTOs is not great. They are going to try and improve it starting with LTO-10. It was partially on purpose for the earlier LTO generations. The capacity/speed ratio was not too high, so you could just kee

It seems like Google, Microsoft, and Apple have all switched into "extract max profit" mode. They don't care about quality or even features anymore. And it comes from the top: the CEOs are not caring anymore, so their lieuten

So it's like a tape library, but for 1Tb optical disks? I think a tape library still wins. LTO-9 allows 18Tb on one tape (without compression) and LTO-10 is 30/40Tb And tape is going to be fine, as long as it's kept in reason

> What allows Wine to run so many Windows apps that there's not an equivalent for MacOS? A lot of work done over 3 decades. Wine also started when Win32 was something comprehensible by one person, so they could build it up slowly.

A $1 a year payment (like in WhatsUp) from all the current Chrome users can easily cover all the reasonable browser development.

"Safari" and "beautiful" in the same sentence? It's not. It's barely functional, slower than Chrome, and always trails it in feature compatibility.

Sure, but such an antenna will be extremely conspicuous and easy to triangulate. You can't install it covertly. Meanwhile, GPS can be jammed or spoofed with a briefcase-sized device for a couple of kilometers around you.

Not really. It uses 2MHz band, with the wavelength of around 160m. This means that it's easy to receive via a ferrite bar antenna but hard to transmit. You need an antenna of at least around 40m size for that to be efficient.

This is a stupid article. "Sad" is not an objective criterion. Is IKEA furniture sad? I think the author would say so. I _love_ the pictured 7-Elevens, especially the one in Austin, TX. They are perfectly functional: you drop in,

WinXP with the "classic" theme was the best. Its default theme was goofy, but changing it took all of 10 seconds. Compared to Win2k, there were some minor improvements.

If only we had a way to run code in a pre-defined isolated environment that can hide most of the differences of the actual hardware... Oh, we do have Docker/Podman? Then why not use _them_ to define your build pipelines? Bonus points:

Why do you even _need_ these "layers"? It's a simple RPC protocol that submits data tagged with Span and Trace IDs. That's really all there is to it. You can just submit it directly, without involving any layers.

OTEL metrics are a bit awkward, but they work just fine with Prometheus. Jaeger uses the OTLP protocol nowadays. So it _is_ OTEL.
