If you look at the demo video at the end, you can see that they are using WordPerfect on Win 98 or Win 2k. I thought this was some kind of joke. But apparently not. So, I believe it when fosap says 2000-era technology.

It is not a question of what technology is best. You can scale anything (im exaggerating a bit). It is more of a question about do you have people on your team who know how to scale things? If so, then use the technology that they are most

This near hour long video is a deep look into Twitter's backend. Specially into the Firehose feature, Flock, etc. They go into detail on how they use Redis and even show one of the actual data structures they store in Redis. A must see

The PHP team does take speed seriously and just about every minor release gets a little bit faster, sometimes alot, like 20% faster. I'm not even including stuff like the opcode caches that are built in now like APC or Zend Optimizer+.

For Linux folks out there, try ReText http://sf.net/projects/retext/ It is an editor for Markdown and reStructuredText. There is syntax highlighting and a live preview mode. The app is written with the Qt library
