I'm puzzled by the critics as well. It's thinner, lighter and faster. It has a better camera, a better display, a better cable, better speakers, better mics and better software. What's not to like?

Well, I replaced the screen on my phone twice before I bought a case. I've dropped my phone many times, both before and after I got the case, but with the case it doesn't seem to get damaged. I got the slimmest case I could find, so it's de

No! Well, sure, there's nothing wrong with technical excellence. But the thing to do is try to understand why this mashup succeed and do more of that . I know very little about music, but I think the editorial choices are what matter most

I actually first learned about Semmelweis as an ethical case study. IIRC, Semmelweis did a formal experiment with a control group: only some of the doctors in the First Clinic washed their hands with chlorinated lime; the others deliberatel

Interesting. He gives three examples of truly RESTful APIs, and Tim Bray was involved in creating two of them.

Awesome write up; thanks for sharing. I'm a self-taught developer too, although it took me more than 6 months to get my first job. One technique I'd add to your list is, "Find online programming communities and take part in them." I learned

I do notice that people invariably get hungry within hours of leaving a restaurant. Clearly restaurants cause hunger. More seriously, it's not surprising that self-help doesn't produce instant results. People have widely varied and complex

Well, sure. Being love might make people happy, but it's not great advice to give. Someone who reads the article might easily decide to take a walk every night at 9:30. He might have to rearrange my schedule or miss his favorite TV show, bu

Even beyond correlation not proving causation, it doesn't sound surprising to me that unhappy people are looking for ways to become happy, but happy people aren't. You might equally conclude that restaurants make people hungry.

Love the idea! I mainly use YouTube to find interesting music, and this would (will?) make that easier. The interface seems sketchy though. Sometimes clicking on a song in the results list doesn't do anything. Other times there's a little f

Well, maybe the law would side with the restaurant if it came to that, but it won't, because the last thing a restaurant wants is a customer hauled away in handcuffs while shouting about how terrible the food is. And when it comes down to i

If I try a new restaurant and they don't bring my food to the table, I walk out without paying. If the food is horrible, I can send it back. If I pay the bill, I'm acknowledging that I got something of value. I may not decide to go back,

What makes you think assignment is simple? V8 is a multi-stage, dynamically optimizing just-in-time compiler. That's complex and advanced, pretty much by definition.

Yes. But it kills me that he could present such a graph, and then fail to comment on the peak at 10.4. That'll have to be a big issue when the reviews of this piece come out.

No, you're right. I'm not a lawyer either, and Padmapper is definitely in a tough position. I'm mostly arguing against the characterization of Padmapper as "stealing content." Most people here seem to think that Padmapper is in the wrong an

Copyright doesn't apply to data. Only the text posted to CL is protected, and Padmapper isn't using that.

You can't copyright data, only its expression. That a certain apartment is available for rent is a fact. The text that appears on the CL website is one expression of that fact. The map that appears on Padmapper is another expression of the

It seems to me that Wired missed a more important aspect of all this. Yes, having started the APM program at Google means she has lots of useful relationships. But more importantly, it means she's solved this problem before .

It probably has to do with the nature of the infringement. I doubt they'd be so friendly with a distiller that was selling "Jack Dawson" whisky with a visually similar label. The book cover isn't harmless, but it's not malicious, either.

Yeah. They're behaving like reasonable human beings to fool us into thinking they're reasonable human beings. But they can't fool us. Imagine the evil they could accomplish if we gave them the benefit of the doubt.
