Well, our best understanding of what generates wealth is that it comes from trade. Trade involves two parties exchanging resources for their mutual benefit. Adam Smith was one of the first to write about this, and yes, he thought that trade

> It's mostly about making money Those things go hand in hand. Ideally, you can't make money without improving human life in exchange. Sure, any political system will include a bit of corruption and rent-seeking, but by-and-large, it'

"development for development's sake"? Development doesn't happen for its own sake. It's about improving the quality of human life and alleviating suffering. If you had to carry water a few miles each day, or gather firewood to keep you warm

Nonsense. If you don't want to work, then don't. Close your laptop, turn off your phone. If you can't do that, you need to learn to set boundaries (see #6 in the article). Personally, I find this the best aspect of working future-style. R

Ok, I've upvoted two articles. This link ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4944163 ) gives me a blank page. Also, I'll note that the second article is also pretty faint praise. It's the travel agency industry association praising a TSA

That. Or, perhaps, the TSA is objectively awful. Tell you what. Post an article that sings the praises of the TSA and I'll upvote it. Then we can have a discussion about bias.

This article gives me an idea. Theoretically, problem with trolls is that they can't be counter-sued because they're non-practicing entities, ie. they're not technology companies. But build.com isn't a technology company either, they just h

Well, Dan Ingalls did something a like that. He implemented a Squeak VM in Java. It's six years old, and even then it didn't run a current Squeak image, but it works pretty well. Announcement here: http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/piperma

True. But note that the matrix isn't a binary "good/bad". If you know the concepts that underly dynamic programming and can look it up when needed, great. If you have used it before and can bang out an implementation without looking it up,

When Amazon came out with DNS-based load-balancing, we thought about switching, but it'd be a downgrade from what we've got already. We direct traffic to the server that's showing the lowest latency right now and switch to another server

You seem to equate "foundation" with knowledge that's not immediately applicable. There's some truth to that, but I think it misses the forest for the trees. Knowledge is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to excellence in software d
