Yes, it is a continuation, although it's more comprehensive than call/cc. When you save a Smalltalk image it serializes not only the call stack but the entire heap. It's rather like a core dump that can resume executing. It&#

Actually, those are the very languages I had in mind. Perl too. Yes, they have many more active developers than Smalltalk. But you know what? I was part of the Ruby community before Rails, and it was tiny. That was after it had been around

Sigh. Nothing killed Smalltalk. It's not dead. Neither is Scheme. Yeah, both of those languages have pretty small communities, but that's viable in the Internet Age. Heck, even Self, which nobody ever used for actual shipping soft

As an engineer it's pretty easy to get used to dismissing opinions about technology from people that don't understand it. At times that's reasonable, but it's also easy to take it way too far. Sam seems to have a healthy

I suppose so. Nix allows me to run N services on M machines arbitrarily with no virtualization and no overhead. My team builds a distributed application. We have nix expressions that define packages for all the parts of the application, and

Yeah, Nix on SmartOS would be awesome. With the right filesystem jiggery, the nix store could be shared across zones. That would make the whole system faster and more efficient. Also, specifying a Manta job via next would be amazing. I'

The appeal of Docker is that containers give you repeatable deployments. Once you have an image, you can deploy it in a well-defined way. But it punts on the question of how you build the image. Nix provides repeatable deployments at the pa

Yeah, I use npm2nix a lot, and it does produce very large files (a few thousand lines of code). But in practice it's fine. I very rarely look at the generated code. If I need to update a dependency, I change my package.json file, run n

Yup. This is pretty much what I do as well, but for Node and Python projects. The best part is that I develop in exactly the same environment that the app has in deployment.

I appreciate the idea of going after a very strong mandate. If he runs that way, and wins, he has a very convincing case that the people want him to make the reforms he promised. But, it also makes it very hard for him to win. He has to fin

I'd love to see a Smalltalk VM running directly on Xen. The language has always been a bit awkward on PCs because in its heart it still wants to be the OS for a Xerox Alto. It ought to be right at home on virtual metal!

I was waiting for the paragraph that read "I'm not talking about pure functional languages because X, nor am I talking about Rust, because Y." So, yeah, uncontrolled side-effect are a PITA. Solutions exist.

Still, you should welcome this debate. It makes "shorter copyright length" seem like a reasonable compromise, rather than crazy and radical as the publishers would portray it.

In the article, they talk about brightness in terms of lumens per watt. That boils down to energy efficiency: you can get a brighter display with the same battery life, OR keep the same brightness and get better life.

I agree. The value of SN is that it's abstract . It assumes a certain structure (the one that western music uses) and describes melody in terms of that structure. It doesn't concern itself with the actual sounds involved (eg. fre

Sure it is. All parts of a Smalltalk program are present as objects that can be manipulated by sending them messages. Classes, methods, variable bindings, closures, stack frames, even individual messages are objects. As a practical matter,
