I'll often say something like "I don't know off the top of my head, but if you want I can get back to you with an estimate." Once it's clear that I'm going to spend some non-trivial amount of time working on th

Ok, if the article is right, then: - our minds don't bother to remember things when we know the information is stored externally and easy to access - given the aggressive way our minds exploit this, remembering must be expensive

Right. It's not a peer-reviewed, replicated, double-blind study using a large, stratified sample of the population of Earth, so it's meaningless.

I did just that move when I realized that I was doing a lot of work so impose schemas on my "schemaless" data and another bunch of work to implement joins in my application. I found the best way to do migrations is with vanilla SQ

I think this definitely qualifies as a new OS. It's true that not everything is completely reimagined compared to what has come before. So what? Great artists steal.

For me the take away to this podcast was not that Harari spends a lot of time meditating. It's that he's good at it . He's learned how to distinguish what is real from what is not, and how to focus his attention for long per

I don't feel Lyft is some paragon of virtue. AFAICT they're a regular Silicon Valley tech company with all of the usual tensions associated with that. The service they provide is a huge improvement on what came before, but there a

Give me a break. It's just as accurate to say "Dart is an open standard, Javascript is owned by Mozilla". There may be valid technical, pragmatic or moral reasons to prefer Javascript, but this is just FUD. (See http:/&

They double the content because they still have all the shows they made last year. That's what makes this model so powerful: new subscribers haven't seen House Of Cards, season 1 yet, so the value proposition keeps getting better.

Nice, I guess. I have to wonder if this sort of thing matters. If Trump fails to live up to his promises, Trump fans will love him anyway, and Clinton fans will think that's just dandy and hate him anyway.

Probably the worst (best) bit of future-past in Neuromancer is that it starts with the main character trying to fence "three megabytes of hot RAM". That seemed like a ludicrously large amount when it was written.

Bad timing. Yosemite broke basically everything in nixpkgs-darwin, and it took a long time to get everything fixed. I think that was mainly due to the switch from GCC to Clang and the accompanying toolchain, library and runtime changes. The

You'd like Nix. It does just this. Each package declares dependencies on specific versions of other packages. That dependency is expressed as a hash of the inputs to the package, not a semver number. This means that multiple versions

If by "dependency resolution" you mean solving the SAT-equivalent constraint problem the article talks about, then yes, Nix does not do that. But, it does solve the simpler problem of installing a package along with the all of i

The great thing about Quicksilver is the grammar - it's actually object, verb, indirect object. That lets you do things like <file>, <email to>, <person>. Alfred didn't have that basic structure when I tried it.

I tried Alfred when it came out. Then, it didn't support that object, verb grammar that Quicksilver did. Does it do that now?

This sort of thing is fascinating to me. I think that somehow, humanity needs to transition to a political structure where cities are the primary unit of governance, rather than nations. That won't happen quickly or soon, but someday..
