"Rare images" and "rare footage" are common phrases in linkbait. It's a particularly ham-fisted attempt to sensationalise a topic. The idea fails to make sense at a very basic level. An image can be duplicated. Scar

What are examples of a good approaches to generic logging? In the past I've found log4j and the python stdlib logging to be frustrating to work with. But when I had a shot at writing my own approaches, I found it to be one of those dom

What's interesting about the above thought is it supposes that what have the technology now, we just lack the technique. You might disagree, but what you wrote paved over the essence of the parent.

Near Reykjavik there's a site called something like the Golden Falls. It's a pretty waterfall. I joined a busload of retirees and other holiday-makers on a tour of sites. We stopped there, went for a walk along the concrete, saw t

Maybe it's more important to maintain a state of mind where you could quickly relax into a period of no-thought, than to actually spend a lot of time in no-thought. Regular exposure makes you aware of when you're spending long per

Wow. That jj idea is a good one. I've been down a similar path to that for other purposes. I changed my leader key to space, and now I can save with <leader>w instead of having to do shift to get :w. But I hadn't thought of

But isn't it interesting that people would find that easy to use, despite being modal? This suggests that the conclusion from the article - to avoid modes - misses the point.

Raskin had a shot at building an editor along these lines but died too soon. His attempt to remove the pain of vi-style modes was by having users hold keys down to get the modal effects. As soon as you release, you're back in command m

It's exactly as you say: if anything, the obstacle with vi for new users is that its display fails to be modal. An interesting consideration though: experienced users know to develop unstacking habits. They wouldn't need the visua

I tried to get scheme shell working recently and had issues. My memory is that it had assumptions about running on 32-bit architecture. Build process segfaults on debian stable, and it isn't available in package management for x64.

If you wanted to recapture that feel of an instant-on console, you could set up a computer that booted into lighttable. It supports mouse and graphics and music. But to get a web browser up, you call a function.

Something to keep in mind about quality - sometimes programmers spend ages doing something in a way that seems like the right way, and the end result is either unimpressive, or a disaster. That destroys goodwill. A project manager who had a

Since lisp is homoiconic (refreshed on this, see downvotes below) it would be nice if you could type things into a repl and then run a function like this: (persist function-i-just-wrote). And then it would save to a text file. Then you woul

Yeah, middle clicking on the page to start a scroll got weird as well. In defense of why-homoiconicity-is-cool: it's useful to build pipelines of things in code. Imagine if you had a series of functions that manipulate an audio signal.

The top reason here could been written - lisp is more expressive. You can find ways to express an idea that make sense now, and which are readable. Macros is a different part of the same idea. -- Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but a problem

Hacker news is very unix focused. This is convenient, but I'd love to see some more blog posts about what's made platforms like VMS or mainframe platforms awesome to work with. (where do these crowds hang out?)

I had a think about it over the day, and decided that what you're proposing would bring power to users, and be an improvement. Focus on content rather than presentation, power to the users, less layers. Thanks for a considered reply.
