I don't think you are anywhere near that line. Using human beings as part of a punchline is pretty much the opposite of funny. Trying to rub something in the nose of people who were laid off is rather tacky, too.

Being able to ask questions well, be it in public online or in the workplace, is a skill worth developing (as is answering such questions). I compiled a shorter and hopefully more actionable list of similar guidelines based on a few differ

My general flow is “do it, teach it, automate it” where the middle step is explaining it to someone else who then also does it then (hopefully) helps, or at least consults, on the automation. This way you can iterate a bit before codifying

The lz4 developers are the zstd developers :) In this case I suspect the IO reductions on the output are what matter -- while lz4 is faster, it also produces more output (of course) which you then have to write to disk. This can make the

Pretty suspicious; certainly dubious, potentially just a scam. Collecting sensitive information, no actual information on the site about who is behind it (bonus: it's a one page site whose backend is a third party), submitted to HN by

The Decoder Ring podcast did an episode[1] recently about the supposed death of the mall. It's a fun listen and covers a lot of the history and evolution of the mall as a concept and how it shaped, and was shaped by, transportation ch

In many ways you can think of large, long-living tech companies not unlike old cities like, say, London or Paris. The buildings and roads you see are built on top of older buildings and ruins. The streets are weirdly shaped and intersect

It feels obligatory to reference Technology Connection in a thread about heat pumps. TC is a super fun YouTube channel that digs j to everyday technology and has had a number of episodes on heat pumps and modern thermodynamic management ch

What? No, this is incredibly short-sighted. It overlooks the fact that much grid energy is renewable already and will become more so in the future. Go with electric sources for cooking and heating (home and water), then let the grid hand

Finally! A potential solution to the housing crisis. Newly VC-infused and rehabilitated Adam Neumann. Yes yes yes. The world needs more of this. This is also a good hedge against the crypto pyramid starting to slow down. Leveraging peo

Half of my interactions with the Slack UI are desperate attempts to not accidentally lose notifications, particularly through threads. "Mark Unread" is the most frequent command I use I think.

I find this spreadsheet handy for thinking about AWS region-wide outages and frequency. This seems to be the first major us-east-2 outage, indeed, vs us-east-1 and other regions. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d&

If a "FUSE to replicate SQLite" solution came from anywhere else, I'd be quite skeptical, but there is a lot of very interesting tech coming out of fly.io these days and Ben certainly knows this space well. It still feels a

This is not a particularly thorough article overall and is made worse by the overly ambitious title. It basically starts with "ssh has problems" and moves immediately to "use an arbitrary separate tool" to solve them.

In general, it is preferable now to use squashfs for most tar use cases three days. Random access, high compression levels, and completely operable with userland tools and a FUSE file system. tar does have some niche uses (streaming) but

It is interesting seeing the evolution of open source maintenance in the light of new (or increasing) supply chain attacks and acts of political protest. There always has been a "what is your obligation to quickly respond to a securit

Not to go full neckbeard on this one, but in addition to FUSE-based options, there is at least one approach that achieves as good (or better) results using more trusted and common primitives in Linux: Just use cryptsetup on loopback mounted

Nice post — one suggestion would be to use zstd instead of gzip though. Out of the box it is much faster and will result in smaller files, and allows tuning to fit inside memory and cpu thresholds different use cases might prefer. Friends d
