Ooh, that's an excellent point -- thanks for bringing it up. I've had Nix installed since early 2014, so I haven't run into any trouble with SIP yet. Looks like we might need to update our docs, and maybe have the installer g

It would appear that your primary takeaway is that we put stuff in a different directory, for an apparently arbitrary reason. I agree, that would be silly -- if it were the case. With /usr/local/{bin,lib,include}, how would y

Yes, this is what Nix offers. You can trivially have have multiple versions of stuff installed without conflicts. Personally, I have multiple versions of the GHC Haskell compiler, Clang/LLVM, Go, Node, etc. In fact, I keep shell.nix

Hi, I'm a NixOS/Nixpkgs comitter and package maintainer for plenty of stuff -- including X11/XQuartz for OSX. Nope. They both do package management, but that's where the similarities end. Homebrew packages are not patche

Nix uses rpaths on Linux (install names on OSX) to fix the precise location of dynamically linked dependencies, and it also patches the paths to executables (e.g. In string laterals or shebangs) needed at run time. To change the location of

I would bet money that it does not. The Virtualbox based solutions all create one VM and run all containers there -- why would they stop doing that just because they're using a different means of virtualization?

Here's why I don't like Homebrew, and why I believe Nix is (almost) strictly an improvement over it: 1. Updating packages is not safe. If I update openssl and the ABI changes, all of my currently installed packages that depend on
