Depends on when you're talking about. When I got my Ripco internet account in 1994, they made me get a parents' signature on a waiver before I could have access because I might encounter adult conversations and pictures of naked p

Not really. We rallied pretty hard against the Clipper Chip. John Perry Barlow ran in those circles (he interviewed Ted Nelson for one Mondo issue) and the EFF was a big presence in the hacker culture. I'll admit we were naive about

I feel like an upvote doesn't do this comment justice. The Guy I Almost Was puts so much of the mid-90s "cyberculture" in perspective. I make a point of reading it every winter, when the dark grey New England skies leave me d

There was a discussion about Mondo 2000 here on HN maybe a year ago, and I remember someone commenting that they & all their friends growing up in California saw Mondo as a huge joke. Their parents and older friends were all working wit

I know the headline is talking about something different, but I always think something along the same lines when someone talks about iOS multitasking. Does the kernel have a Process Control Block? Is there interrupt-driven preemption? Well,

That's a distinction without a difference. Sega built arcade hardware almost identical to their SG-1000 console and ported some of its games to it. Most Neo-Geo arcade "MVS" cartridges were the same as the home "AES"

How is this different from iNames, OpenID, CardSpace, and all the decentralized identity platforms that came before it? Federated identity isn't anything new, and throwing a blockchain behind it is just an implementation detail. The co

There's always one guy (and it's usually guy) who wants to share his tunes with everybody on the bus or subway. As for me, I do it when I'm at home all the time, when I'm doing chores or working from home.

Microsoft used their private APIs in other software to give it an unfair advantage over their competitors, and they did it while they had a monopoly position in their market. That's why the DoJ went after them. Apple doesn't have

Bil Herd's talk at a LUCKI expo gives some good insight into how Commodore (and Jack) worked. The page says 1991, but it was probably 2001-2004. I was there for this one, and I didn't start going to Commodore conventions until 199

It might help to consider TV as the Internet before the real Internet made its way into people's homes. You got a newspaper once a day, but cable TV news was up-to-the-minute, and local TV news filled you in on local events from the da

Yep, that's about right. In the heyday of the 8-bit & 16-bit machines, US users were more focused on user groups than a demoscene. We didn't "party" much. It never became a thing here.
