There are a lot of people, including myself, that disagree that saturated fats are unhealthy. If you read a book like The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet [1] there is a lot of evidence to the contrary

I loved this book, and can highly recommend it. Take a look at the bottom right picture on his Wikipedia page [1], where he is talking about math to a 10 year old Terence Tao, who is now one of the great minds of his generation. I think tha

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cripps_Pink the Pink Lady is of the Cripps Pink variety. I suppose a lawyer would say a "Pink Lady brand Cripps Pink apple" :-)

You might like this article about "branded apples", like the Pink Lady. That's a branded trademark, not a variety. (I like them too.) http://www.economist.com/news/britain/21580468-britains-appe...

The argument is that you won't keep off the weight. See chapter 2 of Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes. If you turn off the calorie restriction, you gain all the weight back, and more.

I disagree. Walking is good, but if you're really overweight then lose it by diet first, before really focusing on excercise. It will be so much easier when you're not carrying all that weight around. I lost 30 pounds this summ

There is a new documentary called Fed Up, produced by Katie Couric, that I'm pretty sure will say that sugar is the most likely cause of the diabetes epidemic. I have it on preorder.... out Sept 9th. http://fedupmovie.com&#x

I would have agreed with you completely before this summer. I had done weight watchers and lost weight, but as soon as I stopped tracking my diet (and restricting my calories), my weight drifted right back to where I started. Gary Taubes ha

You can't use it as an input form, but you can view a nice tree of your expression automatically. TreeForm[ x^2 + 2 x + 1 == (x + 1)^2]

Interesting that the author has a plug at the bottom for his new book, which he says he's been working on for the past 3 years. I guess his book writing got in the way of blogging.

Yes, although it isn't very good. You just upload a photo, and they show you wearing the glasses. As I mentioned, the problem is scale. The glasses seem too big on my picture, since I must be larger than they think.

That's what makes it better than the Warby Parker virtual try on. There you were missing the right scale for the glasses.

I've always preferred Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) to regular VaR. While VaR is the 5% (say) value of loss, CVaR is the average of the loss of the bottom 5%. That way it captures the size of the tail risk. The other really big adv

I have a couple of mechanical keyboards, including a Daskeyboard. I love the feel, but after a few days, my wrists get sore and I can feel the RSI setting in. I never have any trouble with Apple keyboards, and the tiny amount of force they

Statwing is trying to do nice visualizations and analysis in a web browser, without programming. This is more of a way to use R or python to do data analysis on a remote AWS machine. You still have to know what you're doing in R or pyt

It isn't the product that has me worried - it is already very useful. It is the team and financing that is. Will you make it to cash flow positive? Will you survive? Is there at least a reasonable plan to get there?

You should understand that your blog post makes us filepicker users nervous. Please tell us more about what it going on. This is normally the feeling I get when I have to start planning a transition. Give us some fact, or plans even.
