I don't like "tc" because it is not self-explanatory and somewhat cryptic to me. The argument on name collisions is valid, although even "toolsconfig" is not 100 % safe.

While UUIDs are pretty common, they are by far not the only or superior solution. To be able to easily generate IDs on different nodes in a distributed system something host-specific, pure random, or a mixture of both is needed. To be avoid

Incrementing integers doesn't work well in a distributed system, where the IDs might be generated outside of the database (to have it before the transaction ends, for example).

I already mentioned the Python 2/3 problem, but the other things you listed sound like usual new features, which won't work on older versions, obviously. However, I'd expect Python 3.4 code to run perfectly fine on a Python 3

I don't understand the rating in the table. After the Python 2/3 migration I wouldn't expect compatibility problems for the forseable future. And why should Python not work as well for shell scripts as Perl? Why should Java n

Maybe the word "boring" scare some people away, but it is a good contrast to exciting new technology anyway. "Mature" would probably the more appropriate term. Many times the exciting stuff is the problem domain itself.

I see a pattern here ... (recent kill of dpreview comes to mind). Maybe entrepreneurs should value freedom and independence more. If the owners of dpreview and Book Depository wouldn't have sold their business to amazon, then maybe bot

If it is actually so terrible, I wonder why no player in the industry (e.g. Microsoft or some other big player) comes up with a better protocol.

As far as I remember from a post of Brian Goetz changing the existing Optional type is exactly the plan! So, Optional will become a zero-cost abstraction™ in Java. https://cr.openjdk.org/~briangoetz/valhalla/sov&#x

From my experience Kotlin's null handling works better than these external tools. Another point is that also the APIs need some support for it, to be convenient. Kotlin has methods like mapNotNull for example.
