I think the author needs to display a little bit of that compassion he's talking about and realize that learning social skills is not as easy for everyone as it might have been for him. The world is full of different kinds of people, and i

The data in the article does seem to bear this out. The source domain is displayed at the end of each headline, which probably accounts for the shadowy spots on the right side of the veteran redditor heat map. You really only need to glan

The 8-day wait is for free streaming options, so it's not throwing money away. If you subscribe to Hulu+ you can still get shows the next day.

Are you really complaining that Twitter is too hard? It's taken me a couple of years, but I've accumulated over a thousand followers on Twitter. Some of those came through my blog, but most came through Stack Overflow where I'm a moderato

Right, Stack Overflow itself can never be mainstream by definition, but cletus is talking about the (slightly) larger Stack Exchange network of Q&A sites that SO is a part of.

I think Stack Exchange has a much better chance of going mainstream, but by going through the side entrance, not through the front door. Some of the SE sites will fail (a handful already have), but others will be successful in their niche.

I had the same thought. I think the author is only warning against immediately looking on Stack Overflow for existing answers. Formulating a good question of your own for SO requires a significant amount of thinking about the problem, w

No, that was exactly my impression as well. Those comments remind me more of the Daily WTF where everyone points and laughs, but people rarely step forward to explain exactly what the problem is, and more importantly the solution.

I found that the introduction to MIX (MMIX in the latest editions) at the beginning was hard to get through. I pick up TAOCP as a reference once in a while, and I agree that later parts of it are much more readable.

The joke was that no one actually reads TAOCP. It was rumored that Knuth once described them as the "most purchased, least read" computer science books. That rumor was also thoroughly debunked, here: http://markharrison.net/stackoverflow/

Did they want to make it illegal for people to read books without paying for them, or did they want to make it illegal to loan them out? There's a world of difference, particularly now that we're extrapolating that to digital media.

I don't want to split hairs, but if I steal cable for a month, the cable company permanently loses the money I should have paid for a month of cable. Just because they don't lose the 1s and 0s they're selling doesn't mean there's no perman

They're not stealing from the person who loaned them the password, but "theft" is definitely the right word.

The scenarios you're describing seem a lot more like libraries loaning out physical copies of books, each of which can only be used by one person at a time. I think loaning out your NetFlix password is more akin to cable theft than to loan
