You do not have (or write programs for) filesystems that contain loads of ancient mp3 and wma files. It is the bane of my existence, but many programs support all the Latin-1 and other file name encodings that are incompatible with UTF-8, s

Yes and no. Ask Hyundai / KIA owners about the oil consumption in their brand-new engines. Or even 2012-2015 Prius owners about the new head gaskets they will eventually all need. Even brand-new ICE cars are not without their risks.

True for consumers (houses), not true for industrial applications where motors are in the >100HP range.

Because generators -- where virtually _all_ AC power is created -- start running slower with high demand. They catch up, via increased power input through governors, but changes in load will necessarily have some impact on speed.

Good advice, but I'll add that there are many bad things smokeping won't detect. My favorites are APs/range extenders/meshes that don't do multicast properly (mDNS in particular, breaking lots of LAN-based apps), an

Interesting - Anyone know if this problem affects QT5 under Linux? I’ll have to do some digging to find out, but curious if anyone else has seen this on Qt.

I too get pretty consistent response and answers from Alexa these days. There has been some vague decline in the quality of answers (I think sometime back they removed the ability to ask for Wikipedia data), but have no trouble with timers

You might need a horizontal tank. Liquid Propane requires surface space to “gasify”, and more space the lower the temp. That’s (one reason) why propane “pigs” are horizontal cylinders. Unfortunately, there aren’t many small horizontal tanks

How is performance? We found the native Go SSL libraries (as used in, e.g. the http package natively) to add many ms to web api calls. We eventually substituted OpenSSL (despite not really wanting to). It significantly sped up the app. YMMV

FWIW, same experience here. Replaced it with a quiet KitchenAid that has run for over 15 years, only requiring new tray slides once (and hey were not expensive).

It’s hard, but my best advice for Saas builders who get crazy feature requests from non-customers is simple: Don’t reply. You have to judge which requests are “crazy” of course, which isn’t always easy. “If you could just do this one thing,

Another example related to the current action of the user, but outside the scope of the currently-viewed screen: inserting a USB stick, or some other hardware-related function. There is no context for this, and often an action is required.

Yeah, I don't know who labelled a CDC 6500 a "supercomputer". My first college course used a 6600, and there was nothing "super" about it, except the time you waited for your job to run.

You can put a temporary un-freeze on your record, sometimes for a number of hours or days. I think Transunion is the only one that allows you to do this simply with your Transunion login; Equifax and Experian make it much harder.

My favorite Larry Tesler contribution is Tesler’s Law or the Law of Conservation of Complexity[1]. It answers the question “why does this have to be so complicated?”, which I have found to be useful in countless numbers of UI discussions. “

Cryptography is meant to preserve secrecy. Are you implying that cryptography is evil? Or that some other kind of secrecy (like keeping cryptographic algorithms secret) is evil?

Nor would it perform well during compilation, which is very well discussed in the thread. C++ compilation is slow, like the macro expansion of the C versions of min and max. It’s all in the thread, I don’t know how GP missed it.

I get 5-10 SMS messages a day filtered by Verizon’s anti-spam (still get notices for each though). These days they are mostly political pleas, which are, ironically, in some semi-protected gray area. Haven’t noticed any USPS-related ones la

Especially, college radio and other free-form community radio stations. People who feel they have a calling to be a DJ sometimes actually do. I have a reasonable list of TuneIn stations (mostly US) that provide my favorite “discovery”.

“16 times quieter” is not 4 bits. “Half volume” is subjective, and for music is typically between 6 and 10dB (most US audio engineering classes use 10dB).

But it’s somethhing that happens too late. Phishers benefit from low domain prices because they can churn them faster than you can investigate them. Scams are fast, investigation slow. Worse, you investigate only to find that the scammer is
