Must be a west coast thing. One of the first things I noticed when I visited Vancouver for the first time was how many crackheads were just sitting about, and how friendly they were when asking for directions.

What you can trade for using your currency is what gives it value. At least IMO. In that case paper money is doing fine. The primary purpose of currency is too ease trade, not too keep score. As long as the value of paper money stays re

I'd rather have invested that $35 into the stock market. Going by the dow jones from 1933 to today, that $35 would be worth over $9,000. That's the proper comparison to gold.

Hear Hear. Haven't heard that one before but it probably has quite some truth to it. Sort of like the old: "Science advances one funeral at a time" - Max Planck. Anyways. His criticisms are all good ones, and yet I can't help but feel li

Seriously. groklaw is starting to sound whiny with their unending criticism of the guy. Argue the system not the verdict. I am for major reforms to the current patent system, but deep down am secretly pleased that the jury decided to sti

Yes, it is smart. On many levels, even the long run. I think you might not be aware that a very large percentage of drugs in the West emerge from publicly funded research... sometimes even 'basic science' research. While pharma does do its

Why VCs judge people: 1. The team/people do matter 2. They aren't smart/knowledgeable* enough to truly evaluate the merits, weaknesses, etc. of a pitch, so they use people as a proxy. * smart/knowledgable are used here loosely to encomp

Hmm, pretty underwhelming. Great 3D: cool to be sure, but of limited use. Also, I think this is trying to head off Apple's equivalent announcement next week, which I expect to be even more eye-popping, but of the same limited-use. Street

Exactly what I thought when I saw all the responses to Atwood's original post. I think he meant to play the realist card. Of course the world would be better if more people learned how to code, but that comes at a substantial time cost.

I don't remember where I read it, but "watching someone try to do functional programming in python can be painful". I have to agree quite a bit with that. The distinction between lambdas and functions, expressions, etc. I started doing a

You know what's douchebaggy? It's the trend I've noticed where invariably someone says: Blah Blah Blah, I'm so professional, blah blah blah, I'm a boss|manager|startup founder|etc blah blah blah and I'd fire you for this. Edit: Seriously,
