I'm grown increasingly dubious of unikernels; cutting out a layer of indirection by running the target process in kernel space seemed like a good idea -- as long as you didn't need, you know, multiple processes -- but it looks lik

I hated the transition to point and click, because it turned into "hunt for the right pixel" -- with text based games you generally only needed to be in the vicinity of the object you were trying to manipulate.

You should subscribe to the tarsnap-announce mailing list. That's where tarsnap announcements are emailed out. (And yes, the above text is what I sent to the list.)

Agreed. I'd like to get four or five nines rather than merely 99.9% availability. But the first priority is making sure that I don't lose anyone's data.

That's in Firecracker, time it takes to boot the kernel aka before we start running init. Including userland -- i.e. "boot to login prompt" -- it's around 450 ms on the same VM; I haven't optimized the userland bits

Not all code is slow. I can now boot a FreeBSD kernel in under 20 ms, which I'm pretty sure beats a 20 year old FreeBSD (not to mention a 20 year old Windows).

I've taken quite a few flights in E90s and was always impressed by them. I was sad when Air Canada replaced them with A220s -- of course I understood the politics of wanting to use a Bombardier plane.

I agree that there should be some mileage weighting; but on the other hand, long distance widebody flights are usually piloted by more experienced crew (they're preferable and flights are typically assigned by seniority). It would be i

Looking at this list I'm struck by the separation between narrowbody jets which generally make shorter flights (Embraer, 737, A318-A321) and widebody jets which generally make longer flights (A330, 767, 777). The exceptions of course a

If you enjoyed this, you might enjoy my work porting FreeBSD to Firecracker. I gave a talk at BSDCan which will be on YouTube sometime soon, and also wrote it up for the upcoming edition of the FreeBSD Journal.

AWS does provide sponsorship for some open source usage of their infrastructure. They host some FreeBSD mirrors, for example. I've reached out to a couple of my contacts to point them at this.
