I agree that there should be some mileage weighting; but on the other hand, long distance widebody flights are usually piloted by more experienced crew (they're preferable and flights are typically assigned by seniority). It would be interesting to see statistics for maydays as well; most shorthaul flights have the advantage of having nearby airports for their entire route.
