how would you make it different? Have smarter users. If your package breaks because it depends on trivial code which got deleted, you shouldn't have depended on that in the first place . Preventing people from deleting their code -

FWIW, being off by 10s of dollars sounds to me like different ideas of how to count days. Banks sometimes use calendar days, sometimes business days, and sometimes a fictitious calendar with 12 months of 30 days each.

It would be very nice if they would publish a libreoffice spreadsheet, yes. Heck, it would be very nice if they would create a libreoffice spreadsheet, even if they don't publish it. If they had to read their own document, it would

None of this complexity is from trying to plug tax loopholes. Most of it is from politicians wanting to name things. For example, for decades Canada has had a "personal amount" tax credit -- for arcane reasons, rather than saying

To be fair, Nova Scotia, Yukon, and Ontario each only add a handful of extra nodes. I just didn't want to bother with those because I'm in BC. Quebec is a different matter; far more complicated to calculate payroll deductions for

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is the autoimmune destruction of the thyroid gland. No amount of Iodine helps; you need T3 (usually administered as T4 which is then converted to T3 endogenously).

But it's not the case that "T3 is the active form" as you'll read in the literature, it's that the removed iodine is the active or useful thing. Supplementation with T3 yields a rapid correction in bradycardia and

At a certain point, the line between religion, culture, and law becomes unclear. In a culture with ancestor-worship, where do you put "my grandfather always said that if someone steals food they should have a finger cut off"?

Oh, absolutely. MRI machines are incredibly dangerous if not handled properly. But the overwhelming majority of MRI-related dangers are well understood and avoidable.

I think it's an important point to reinforce because news stories like this can make patients afraid of MRIs, potentially resulting in them avoiding necessary imaging. Most people on HN are probably not going to make that error -- but

Note: MRIs are incredibly safe. Your risk of dying due to an MRI machine exploding is significantly less than your risk of dying due to falling while climbing into the machine.

The original article has load-bearing typography in the title, which was lost when it was posted here. dang, can you add some punctuation to change the title to "Sudo without a setuid binary; or, SSH over a Unix socket"?

You're missing the point. If you need 24 m^3/day of fresh water, you can have a desalination plant producing 1 m^3/hour and a water tank to match supply to demand. But if you only want to run the plant for 3 hours/day

The only time I copy data (or keys for that matter) is when I'm constructing the new serialized page(s). All the rest of the work is done with pointers into the old page or the request structures.

Ah, that would explain it. Yeah, I have a total datastore size which is out of core, but the working set is generally in core... partly because I can use all the RAM on the system if I want to, whereas filesystems are (usually!) expected t

For my workload it's optimal to keep working nodes deserialized anyway. YMMV but what I'm doing gets me over a million operations per second -- 1 Gbps of requests -- on a single CPU so I don't think I'm going far wrong.

Note: In most cases you don't want to split pages prior to insertion as is being done here. Instead, you want to insert data first, and then restore the page size invariants at the end (prior to committing the operation / writing

Yeah, we considered following Linux's lead by creating a new "i386 with 64-bit time_t" ABI but frankly nobody was interested in doing a lot of work for probably very little benefit.
