I understand that; the problem is that it makes it so easy to bypass the safety net the warning is intended to provide. For example, not logging an exception; You'd have to be really intentional to block the warning with an actual anno

I find it exceptionally rare to want not to use a variable that way, it's usually something you want to make harder to ignore, not easier. In the case you really do want to ignore, there are annotations to prevent the warning.

My $0.02: Unnamed variables just seem to add confusion and inconsistency. Inconsistency like this in Scala and Perl make it harder to learn and offer little value.

Can you clarify 'hugely important'? The cited article seems to be saying 'don't make bad design choices or sacrifice usability or accessibility in the name of (bad) design'. I don't see it saying anything about

The bank chose to make risky investments with the deposits it held. That's on the bank, not the fed.

How can you blame the fed for the bank not having funds to cover the deposits?

It might just be as simple as a defensive/precautionary maneuver to convert a slam dunk case into a triviality that could be decided in a default judgment. If you can get there blessing even if you don't need it, it's that mu

Weird; I see the former symbol all day every day and have no trouble recalling. I see the second symbol almost never, maybe once a month, definitely not as easy to recall.

It's not cacheless. There are countless caches throughout (including what appears to be ~1TB of memory in the database server), just not a dedicated cache machine.

I think the author is pointing out that, even if the error message is useless, it should not try to be funny. The funny bit is upsetting in these stressful situations.

I can remember that the inequality symbol means != but I'd prefer the lower cognitive load of not having to recall anything at all. I like that Typing "!=" results in "!=" being printed to the screen. I like that pr

The last thing I want is for my text to look interesting. I want it to be boring and instantly recognizable. I want text editors showing it to work predictably. Two characters should show as two glyphs with the background showing through th

As someone that uses Edge by default, I see Google doing the same thing with Chrome. Various Google properties complain I'm not using Chrome. When I open chrome, it asks about being default... I never see Edge interfering. I switched t

I traded a galaxy S3 + 3 year agreement in for a free S22; can you do that with an iPhone? Seems like we are comparing a free phone to a many hundreds of dollars phone.

My preference is easier to read and edit. Readability and editability come with consistency, and that's science. Ligatures break the consistency.

I'm confused too. The comment was about ligatures in computer code, but did not itself contain computer code.

Preferring it is personal preference. It being good or better is science. People prefer dark theme even though it's objectively harder to read because of the reduced contrast ratio, among other reasons.

Vertical columns of background have, until ligatures, been a bullet proof means for brains to delineate characters. Is it possible to figure out with an increased cognitive load? Yes. Is it exactly as easy as without? No.

Ligatures make code harder to read and harder to edit. It's not just personal preference, it's the science of usability. When I press backspace or cursor keys, I expect one glyph to be erased, not who-knows-how-many (half?!). Auth
