The thing I don;t get is how malleable it all is. I remember evangelizing the Mac over DOS because you shouldn't have to remember some stupid mnemonics to use the computer. Now I have to put up with fairweather Mac fans telling me that Vist

Without wanting to sound negative, you've assumed that family names represent families. This might have been true 50 or 100 years ago, but now many families are non-nuclear. It isn't unusual for a family to include three different last name

Unix is better than Windows because doing Unix development is easier on Unix than on Windows? I like OS X, but this is not a very well-constructed argument.

I'm sorry to disagree with you, but despite all of the emotional baggage that surrounds platform choice, I do think Microsoft is kinder to developers. I remember the Stac case, but it was 18-odd years ago. It's more relevant to me now tha

The first Mac I actually owned was an SE. Since then I've owned five more Macs. I bought top-of-the-line Macs when people were telling me that Apple was about to go out of business. I developed a lot of software for the Mac. I'm all about d

Zed Shaw is the archetypal Rails proponent, and explains in full why Rails has such an uphill struggle to be accepted. It's as if being a Rubyist requires being a dick.

The point that Linux enthusiasts become Linux realists is when they realize they are afraid to put their laptop to sleep by closing the lid.

Very true. One thing that has stung me about Rails is the conceit; if you have a requirement that runs against the grain, Rails developers seem to have no problem in saying "that's stupid; you shouldn't want that."

Hmm, so your routes are "structural comments." Isn't this what XML is for? Am I the only one here who finds this ugly?

Two if you count Linux. Are you complaining that Silverlight doesn't run on BeOS or something? And saying "no one uses it" is brainless. In 1996 did you dismiss Macromedia Flash 1.0 because no one used it?

The best answer isn't necessarily the right answer. You should consider which style is closest to your likely users and try to appeal to them. If your users are independent web developers then python-style would make sense. If you are aimin

You should travel. Very few people regret traveling. Start somewhere easy like Thailand, spend six weeks crossing India, spend a month or two in Vietnam. Travel light, but take a credit card. You'll be transformed and work will make sense a

I'd be interested to hear the advantages Rails offers for data visualization compared to, say, a .NET-based site. Are there any Rails features that help deliver client-side-heavy content?

I'm not sure emphasizing how much easier branching is in Git is a good idea. Git already has a "herding cats" kind of reputation. Programmers like branching because it lets them be less conservative in their planning. Project managers hate

I think one reason Apple has always kept a fairly hefty cash balance is that it makes hostile takeovers harder. The other thing you can see from Apple's history is that they tend to buy smaller companies only when the software those compani

HP is the odd one out. HP sees the future in services, just like IBM. They're fattening (ie: media-ing) up their consumer products to sell off their entire PC line in the next 3 or 4 years.
