The Switch is 90% an Nvidia Shield Tablet. One of the best Android tablets ever and it barely sold. Get Nintendo to market it and it sells at a rate matching 50% of the global tablet market every year.

One thing the PS1 did have going for it was a MDEC jpeg decoder chip. Pretty much all of the FMV in PS1 games were MJPEG (a stream of independent jpegs). Between that and using the rasterizer to apply motion vectors and color interpolation

I remember back around the time of the iPhone 1 seeing a “this is the future!” commercial featuring a lady using a tablet. She was making lots of vague gestures that didn’t correlate to anything on the screen and the tablet “just knew” to d

Same. Only recently replaced my 6+ with a 12. I used my old phone constantly for 6 years. And, it was still pretty useable at the end. Amortized over that much time the new one is a reasonably cheap upgrade.

They are used widely in games. But, not so much elsewhere. Non-game-app designers get upset by the artifacts. I've shipped games using them for UI. We were hapy to tolerate the artifacts in exchange for the 8X memory usage & me

Also, the Xbox Adaptive Controller deserves a lot of respect. https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-adap... That’s not a token effort or a cash-in. The team behind it really gave a damn.

Continuous LOD research dropped off dramatically when GPUs got vertex shaders. At that point, having the CPU touching the vertex data at all became more expensive than it could be worth. Instead, 3 or 4 static LODs have been the way to go.

Yes, and: in return you get documented guarantees about how much time certain operations are allowed to take. As opposed to “We work hard to make it fast most of the time. But, no promises because sometimes stuff happens.”

The IRS wants their cut of your profits. So, if you buy $10 US worth of euros, spend half of them, the dollar tanks, and you exchange the remaining half back for $6 US, then you profited by $1 US and the IRS wants part of that one dollar.
