Is anyone surprised a file called "free download manager" was malware? Anyone that lived through Kazaa isn't surprised :)

So let me get this straight... They went through a phase of, "Let's rewrite it in Rust (from Go)!" but it got complicated, because reasons. One of their reasons is Cargo's cross compilation is bad so they decide to use Z

I have created a custom unique identifier scheme before. This post doesn't address some of the challenges you come across. 1. When dealing with user friendly IDs, it's often important to make sure there are no ambiguous characters

That sounds nice, but it looks a lot like a "what if" scenario. What if I need to support a dozen systems? What if I need to do fancy 3D graphics? What if I need to do some other thing that isn't my problem right now (and lik

Weird.. their answer is to ship a hybrid Go+Rust binary sandwiched with Zig. It's a like a who's who keyword stuffing technical blog post with vomit inducing technical decisions.

Unity has built a very impressive engine and runtime. With that being said, I have never had the desire to use it (or any other engine). Perhaps I'm a minority here, but I dislike engines and I dislike the idea of "building my own

My issue with Rails has always been that-- not just the JS ecosystem rot, but gems in general. Running "bundle update" after six-eight months is like rolling the dice. Especially if you use any Rails engines, etc.

This is why I no longer blog. Guy puts time into a blog post writing his thoughts only to be told it's overwritten and he's complaining about something he didn't even try to contribute to. I guess we should all stop complaini

I see this same issue with htmx and other takes on SSR.. just because you can dynamically update the HTML doesn't mean you should make EVERYTHING dynamic. It's okay to have normal page transitions. It's okay to do something d

We work in an industry where senior developers don't know the difference between git and Github. The same seniors don't know the difference between Github actions, Travis CI and have never heard of Jenkins. Hardly anyone cares. Ar

I have been thinking of giving my game ideas a try these days... I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I have completed a few small games in the past but never released on a public market. I can't imagine a game being financially feas

Create a Stripe checkout. If someone pays, you can email them the PDF files to whatever email they provided during checkout. I'd do it manually at first. If it annoys you later, automate the emailing of the PDFs.

Interesting timing since Insomnia just died on me with the recent flatpak update (apparently my LTS linux install doesn't have the correct glibc, so goodbye Insomnia I guess). I like that receipeui got rid of electron. I don't lik

Facial recognition and mass surveillance has been done at stadiums, casinos and all over cities for over 12 years. I worked at a company in NY that designed and deployed the software that controlled the video feeds for stadium and casinos.

Rotation helps, but as a more senior/experienced person on the team it's easy for things to be "elevated" up to you because person X couldn't figure it out, etc.

Most jobs in the bay area are 6-7 day a week jobs. You may not be logged in to Slack on Saturday and Sunday but you're monitoring email or on the look out for PagerDuty.

The problem seems to stem from interactivity on the web. Of course, there's a spectrum here... static content pages on one side and games on the other. The problem as it stands today is most web pages are on the static/low interac

I don't think the answer is shifting focus to HTML. The answer seems to be in relinquishing some control back to the browser, but finding a way to make the experience smoother and add interactivity as needed without handicapping the br

I sorta get it-- Svelte is simpler than React (at least at face value). What I don't get is why as an industry we are hung up on this need to do so much with JavaScript. In the end, Svelte is an incremental improvement over the thing t

My daughters are too young to have a phone, but old enough to play games. Our general rule for gaming is simple. We only do it on the weekends, and we do it together. We make it a family thing.
