Don't just count the one lamp. A home will have dozen of bulbs. This remote lets you control all of the bulbs/lamps at once. Use Turn Touch to set scenes or interactively cycle through "random" scenes until you get the l

The pedestal (pictured on the site) is exactly that wall control. I built the pedestal because I wanted my remote to live somewhere. The pedestal holds the remote in place with 6 hidden magnets, leaving you free to pull the remote off the w

You're absolutely right that wood is driving up the price. But if this does well enough in wood then I'll launch a plastic version in a year or two for $49.

Eventually I'd like to build an Android app. NewsBlur has a native Android app, so I would just divert my Android developers attention to the Turn Touch app. I'm waiting to see if there's sufficient demand for the iOS and mac

The remote connects to your iphone, iPad, or Mac. The phone/computer uses wifi or the net to talk to your devices. You can also use IFTTT to control hundreds of devices that aren't natively supported by Turn Touch. I have a Turn T

Same company, new product. Plus the remote integrates with NewsBlur. I tend to only build productivity tools that use aggregation to get work done.

Five years now. I was researching how to build buttons the day Google announced the Reader sunset (March 13, 2013). That pushed me back a bit as I had to get NewsBlur in shape. It’s a solo project so it took a while to prototype and launch

Hey HN, I run NewsBlur and am launching my hardware project Turn Touch today. Launched last year as a Kickstarter campaign, it is now available for immediate shipping. Turn Touch is a beautiful wooden smart home remote and pedestal. It’s de

Yes you should do this. I’m about to hire somebody to work on the NewsBlur web issues while I attend grad school. I have a strong feeling that a lot more is about to happen once I start hiring other developers to build it further.

Considering your reply and because I now have a lot of opinions to share, I think I might write a Joy of Software and Woodworking article. I feel like I can condense it down to how I figured out how to piece together the parts (cad, cam, cn

Woodworking on a CNC is very much a software job. I built a wooden remote and for the most part it’s software with a woodshop component. I explored how I made it in detail in a series of blog posts if you’re interested. https://m

I never publicly announced this but I loved Slashdot’s friend/foe system so much that I built it as a cross browser extension for Hacker News. It’s called Hacker Smacker and it’s on GitHub. https://github.com/samuelclay

I'm glad I put myself out there for feedback because it was your comment that caused me to see my campaign in a new perspective. I actually shot two videos. The founder interview at the end cost $4k because it was originally a longer v

That's fascinating. I had heard feedback around the setup before, but I didn't realize it would be beneficial to show how quick it is to pair smart devices to the remote. I easily could have done that in an animated GIF. Secondly,

Ah-ha, we hit my area of expertise which is talking about how four buttons is all you need. It's a 16 button remote. Hold a button down to switch to that button's app, and each app has its own four buttons. Buttons can also perfor

The only ads I bought were about $2k of Facebook ads, which converted into about $1.6k of pledges. Not a winning strategy. I hired a couple people with experience in FB ads to help me with the audience, but the CTR of 3-4% at $0.25 CPC did

I mean come on. I'm asking friends to vote for my post. I wrote an enormous post that offers a guide for many people looking to build their own hardware. The least I could do is get it as widely seen as possible.
