IMO, the problem those had is that they're too simple. XMODEM in particular was basically "send part number, then 128-byte blob". Not to mention the CP/M-ism of <EOT>. It has no room for extensibility, and its us

A big problem is that text-based protocols are hard. People think they're "simple" but they're not — it's a lie. Text is one of the hardest things to get right, but Eurocentrism (read: ASCII) leads many to write bad

Not necessarily JavaScript, but some kind of rendering or templating engine. As shown in the blog post, Go works.

Lightning only ever supported USB 2.0. Theoretically, the free serial pins could’ve been used for the SuperSpeed 3.0 pins, but Apple never did.

It wasn't that RSA was "too big", but that RSA wouldn't fit in the remaining space — especially when you consider the complex RAM initialization routine they implemented.

Yes, but the third level isn't a "triple pointer", but a pointer to the next level. A page table level isn't just a pointer-to-a-pointer but carries information. So a three-level table doesn't have `void***` in the

MEMS, in general, is a marvel in its own right. The idea of reusing the planar process that's used to make normal ICs, but to measure physical movement is quite an engineering hack.

I didn't say protobufs were a valid replacement - you only think I did. "Protobufs and other binary formats already existed, [..]". I was only using it as an example of a binary format that most programmers have heard of;

A controversial opinion, but JSON is that too. Not as bad as XML was (̶t̶h̶e̶r̶e̶'̶s̶ ̶n̶o̶ ̶"̶J̶S̶L̶T̶"̶)̶, but wasting cycles to manifest structured data in an unstructured textual format has massive overhead on the source

Yes and no. It wasn't just about telling you a problem occurred, but failing early and being able to say exactly why . A "something in the chain is running in 7-bit mode" is more helpful than "CRC error in IDAT".

Those are indeed the "magic" bytes of PNG. It's a very clever choice meant to ensure the transport layer didn't mess with it. To start, there's a byte with the upper bit set which ensures an "8-bit clean"
