Most of modern technology company culture has strayed too far from doing more formal processes for managing development. By not having a basic process for defects, features, etc, every engineer has to make up and invent the process for how

Obsidian supporting properties is the beginning of it's attempt to replace org-mode for me. Something I do wish they did was take the plugins that are clearly ubiquitous, and just make them default. It's weird to think that Obsidi

Yup, definitely write code that goes on servers. I agree with you about containers. The article was about writing small cli programs, and compiling them yourself. I guess I assumed you would be able to rebuild in this discussion trivially -

Thus my last sentence: if you aren't shipping to production... you are really just copying files around, and you have a glibc. I think I just use linux enough that all the macos bugs I don't experience.

What home filtration do folks use? My biggest fear in over filtering is then the decision of what to add back feels too overwhelming, whereas leaving it completely out of my control means it's not my fault :)

Even shops that shipped static binaries, they all still shipped containers at the end of the day to run in production. I find a lot of the static binary hand wringing basically: did you ever solve how to ship more than 1 file to production?

Well, it does mean what I think it means because language is descriptive, not prescriptive :) I will never forget sitting in a 4-8 hour meeting for a day reviewing our entire dependency tree, and whether or not SJ-BCOMKA-4.11 had a dependen

The irony being of course, that huge flat slabs are not somehow inherently more "functional" than something with a handle, or a screen that doesn't break, or a back that doesn't scratch etc. We just kind of hand-wavy ann

The argument they should be making is more straight forward: We should not allow a University to become so mismanaged that every degree must be profitable, but instead a positive ROI for all students. Second, languages are not an optional p

And the really big ones do much more epic clock management, and keep things wildly in sync across the globe. See the recent work with PTP that fb and others are trying to do openly. Google and others have their own internal implementations.

You are hitting on the largest problem with high density HDDs - the IO dosn't scale with the density, and thus the data needs to be colder and colder that you put on the drive. The cold data thesis hasn't worked out as well in the

Ok, I'll rant now. Tape drives have multiple heads for IO, which allows some to fail along the way and you can still read/write your data. This sounds good - but it actually just means these tape drive heads are flaky. What do you

HAMR has some serious faults with it's io heads (could rant about this forever), especially given the "reman" logic they use to qualify the durability of the drives. I'd wait until these actually ship, and we get some da
