Even so, profitable self driving is binary; either there’s a human driver in the car or there isn’t. Uber is ”bold” but not bold enough to put thousands of self-driving cars on the road illegally.

I dunno, that sounds like a trade war to me. If it were this easy there’d be no need for international diplomacy.

Just a few months ago there was a leaked email from Google execs talking about how Google Cloud needed to start making more money or it would be shuttered within a few years. It’s pretty simple really. Google acts like a VC — place lots of

I guess if you don’t have direct internet access then sniffing wifi traffic at the local coffee shop might be the only way to get weather updates.

Easy access to a huge library of books is one of the main selling points of the Kindle. DRM is good for Amazon.

The company I work for runs networks on trains. We pay at least 10x for all our components (switches, APs, cables etc.) for exactly this reason; everything needs to be certified a bunch of times. And since there’s so few people buying these

This can be generalised to “having a deep understanding about your tech stack is good and profitable”. Spotify did the opposite and went from a complex peer to peer design to a “throw everything in an s3 bucket” design because the underlyin

Electron (WebKit) is much more than a rendering engine though. Sure, you could use Servo in a desktop app, but you’d have to also bundle all the other browser components (a JS engine, for example) individually. You’re basically building a b

Oh no, the terrorists use iPhones so now we can only get access to their location, iMessages, photos, browsing history, credit cards and all purchases made through Apple Pay. Might as well not bother sending a request at all.

I think this is a great point; it’s much more important that ideas survive than that the posts themselves do. Even if Reddit gets turned off tomorrow, hundreds of thousands of people will know that the Tiananmen Square massacre happened.

Japanese is interesting because one “letter” in the alphabet represents a complex sound (e.g. か = “ka”) and one kanji can describe an entire word (e.g. 花 = “hana” = flower). So a column of Japanese characters is actually more information de

It’s not though. Sure, it’s pretty easy to self host videos but YouTube is much more than that. It’s the only open access video platform with a good (existing?) monetisation strategy, for example.
