Honestly the best use of AI at the moment is to replace non-technical middle management layers. Many of those yelling the loudest for “more AI now” are quite ironically holding the jobs best replaced by the current creation of AI.

Congrats to the founders but honestly feel bad for the team. Hearing so many not good things coming from inside AWS these days. Place sounds like a total mess. Seems like a constant stream of top talent fleeing on my LinkedIn this past year

Well the reason data center stuff is news is that local boards are resisting all the usual efforts. It’s been quite extraordinary, but town after town is sending the data center folks packing.

In theory yes. In practice if the local congressman wants to keep their job they’ll block it at any cost if there’s local opposition.

There isn’t much the federal government can do here. Planning permission is very local in the US. If local officials don’t want a data center it isn’t happening. In most communities these days you’d have better luck proposing to build a tox

OpenAI is getting its butt kicked by Anthropic on user growth. This appears to be a calculation that while burning more cash will hurt, continuing to fall behind on users will hurt more and may even be fatal to the company’s prospects movin

We’re about to see a wave of “enshitification” experiments as AI companies become increasingly desperate to make their products financially viable in order to survive the coming cash and credit crunch.

More difficult is a relative term. More difficult but still easier than other countries so the US remains in a stronger position here. The US can sustain the mess a lot longer than most countries can survive it.

The US would then just stop importing that electricity and funnel the power in from domestic sources. The electricity comes in from Canada because it’s cheap, not because the US can’t make electricity. Canada would shoot itself in the foot

Its nice to see some backbone, but the challenge for Canada is that it’s broadly in a weak negotiating position here. Generally speaking Canadian companies need access to the US market a lot more than US companies need access to the Canadia

I think it’s a combination of: 1. “Smart” people tend to constantly see patterns others are missing. So they’re fretting about problems others are blissfully unaware about. Sometimes these “problems” matter and somethings they don’t. 2. Con

ROI doesn’t mean “does it help.” Few question if it helps. ROI is about how much its costs vs the value of the “help.” That’s where the present crisis is. Is the ROI there to pay for the trillions in commitments that have been bet on that R

If that was true then there wouldn’t be a giant ROI crisis fueling calls of an AI bubble burst imminent. If the answer was “the ROI is clear” then folks would just say that.
