It has never been argued that copyright law should apply to information the people learn, whether that be from reading books or newspapers, watching television or appreciating art like paintings or photographs. Unlike a person, an large lan

I don't think this question really makes any sense... In my opinion, it's kind of mish-mashing several things together. "Can you elaborate on how it's not comparable?" The process of individual people interacting wi

I don't see how this is a double standard. Comparing a person interacting with their culture is not comparable in any way. IMHO, it's kind of a wacky argument to make.

I've wondered what might happen if IBM lowered costs on this hardware... If they offered a compelling deal, it's conceivable a startup might choose them over Linux. As it stands now, I find it near impossible to imagine any organi

I helped setup the computers at JavaNet here in Northampton, MA; I believe that was in 1995. At that time they were also a local dial-up provider, their cafe definitely a coffee shop and was also quite cozy. https://web.archive.o

The violation of rights isn't great, the article also mentions seizing cash which may be just as bad or worse in some cases. One person cited in the article was traveling to purchase a truck and the deal fell through ($30k), an elderly

Maybe the saddest thing is how much the videos look like the demo on the Caledo website. It's just as weird, with one anchor doing a weird giggle that is abruptly cut short. The lip-syncing is equally iffy. I have to wonder, "who

This feels like hyperbole to me. People can reasonably expect Wikipedia to have factual data even though it sometimes contains inaccuracies. Likewise if people are using ChatGPT for search it should be somewhat reliable. If I'm asking

Health insurance in the US is a large, complicated mess. OTOH, hospitals and healthcare providers are also a large, complicated mess. In my opinion they are somewhat codependent and, in many cases, fighting for the same dollars. That is, I

The argument here is that the US will have worse health outcomes than another country because the people are less healthy. Cost of care doesn't factor into this argument.

I have to disagree that 4GL languages being aimed at the big iron, mainframe world. After browsing the Wikipedia page, there seems to be some confusion around what a 4GL would actually be... For instance, RPG is lumped into this category de

Copying text out of the PDF from my phone is not fun! The gist is that since the CDL isn't okay then they don't really need to deal with NEL as it's predicated on the legality of the CDL (pages 15-16). The NEL gets a couple o

This is kind of a stretch, the Internet Archives book lending program under the CDL was not like a free Amazon. Reading software is limited and not great. Check out their website for details. https://help.archive.org/help&#x

They aren't lending the physical book and the digital book simultaneously; there's only ever one "book" lent. To my mind this is materially different from sites like Anna's Archive.

Still, under the CDL it is only one book, one person. This is significantly different from a site like Anna's Archive.

How was the CDL hurting working authors? A library bought the book, paying the publisher and the author. The IA scanned the book for digital lending, this digital copy could only be checked out by one person and only when the physical book
