I'm going through this now so I'm equally excited. A little bit off-topic, but how did you deal with the back button problem? Currently, if my user navigates a few pages deep in my app and clicks the back button, it exits the app and goes b

That's very odd. James Golick of Fetlife had the opposite experience with Softlayer (link to his video in my post). I currently manage ~40 servers on EC2 and I'm confident that I could get away with just 5 "decent" dedicated boxes. EC2 gets

I'm not migrating from EC2, this is for a personal pet project where price matters. However, you just proved my point. If a 9 year old CPU performs 10 times better than a m1.small for the same price, something's not right. That said, it's n

Read the article. I'm simply saying that EC2 is at least 10 times more expensive than the competition but people don't seem to realize it. The performance on EC2 is basically equivalent to a 10 year old crappy computer.

I agree that it is much more flexible. However, is it really worth paying 10-20 times more? I'm not sure. The price I got at Joe's is not even "that" cheap. You can get a MUCH faster box at Softlayer for not much more, making EC2 look even

Thanks for the JoesDataCenter link. Definitely a great find! I'll give them a shot one day. I could only find great reviews on Google, but I'd love to hear from fellow HNers.

I'd love to be able to list the highest rated movies or shows available on Netflix, for example. I can never find anything good to watch it seems. Thanks for such a great service!

This is one of the best article I've seen in a long time! Great job Mike and best of luck with your new startup!

Check out Context.io, they have a unique and interesting take on "incoming email". Basically, they turn mailboxes into databases.

I caved and ended up buying BOTH Buddhism Without Beliefs and Nothing Special. I got Nothing Special for $4 (used/paperback) so I figured I'll just throw it in. Looking forward to some reading!

This is harder than it seems! I couldn't go past 7 and barely lasted a minute. I got hyper and missed Hacker News :) I'm ready to go to bed now, but I'll try again tomorrow. I never thought trying to relax would feed so odd! Thanks again fo

I was also about to purchase the book as well only to find out it is not available on the Kindle. I realized that I never actually read the paperbooks I buy so I figured I'd stop buying them altogether. Are you aware of great alternative bo

Great information in that other comment of yours. When you say "yoga", is it what ladies do following a DVD or is it some other form of meditation I am not aware of?

I'm getting increasingly interested in meditation, mainly because it seems like it could make me use my brain better. I have no clue where to start though. Anyone has info to share? I'm a total noob to this. Thanks!

Riak is definitely an option I'll consider, but experience has taught me one thing: most of the time it's better to stay with the most mainstream tools, such as MySQL, even if that means not using the absolute best tool. As long as it gets

Mongo is fine until it's not. It's been fine for us for many months, but once you hit its limitations, it's pretty horrible. We're in this situation right now and we're seriously considering moving back to MySQL or Postgres. Basically, "it

Being from China, you have one major advantage over most of us: you're in the booming market of China. If I knew anything about your country, language and culture, I'd probably give it a shot. You should use your situation to your advantage
