It's a technical post on their engineering blog about how they implemented it. Why wouldn't that belong on Hacker News?

The point is, there's obviously demand for this from companies that won't pay thousands/month for it, so it's a question of who will build it for them.

It's trivial with Rails, at least.

I guess people's definitions of "important" can differ. Emoji are used in communication between many millions of people every day all across the world. Sounds pretty important to me!

For what it's worth, Unicode itself does not utilize those assumptions and that probably matters more than how Emojipedia.org interprets them. Those characters are simply referred to as "Two Women Holding Hands" and "Two

iOS on iPad, especially after the redesign in iOS 7, has always felt like it was merely scaled up from iPhone. Because, for the most part, it was. I believe Apple could do a lot more with iPad UI to make it more suitable for larger screen s

That's the old documentation style. They redesigned their documentation last year. It hasn't made it to all documentation yet, but new stuff uses the new design. Still has some strange UI bugs, but it's at least responsive no

I have to imagine the smart folks at Apple are aware that businesses close and that they need a way to keep track of that. It's obviously not this particular tool, but there is surely someone working on that problem within Apple.

Perhaps it would make sense to update your Gist to make it clear that Apple isn't trying to force people to funnel their searches through their servers, and that the real issue here is confusing UI?

This is inaccurate alarmism. It shouldn't be surprising that the search bar makes autocomplete requests to Apple as you type. The address, phone number, and map link that popped up when you typed in the name of a local business, for ex

So a kernel panic. Do people seriously see those often? I could count on one hand the number of times Mavericks panicked.

FWIW, I have rarely if ever seen OS X crash. I'm unsure what that would even look like. Are we talking about kernel panics? A single built-in app crashing while you using it? Every app suddenly closing?

Can you expand on why App Engine doesn't allow multithreaded Go programs? I never quite understood what they were trying to prevent you from doing.

He didn't say Go. He said multi-threaded Go. GOMAXPROCS=1 on App Engine.

Arch suffers from the same problems, or at least it used to. I had a system that was out of date, and it became essentially impossible (or at least very, very difficult) to get it up to date.

Forcing mobile users to rotate their devices to landscape mode to see the site seems like a very lazy design decision.

Yep. Google Cloud Platform has some really great things in the pipeline, as previewed at I/O and elsewhere. Managed VMs in particular will be great, especially with support for custom Docker runtimes.

Docker is just one piece of the puzzle. They still have a lot of work to do, as he said in his comment. Things like container orchestration, networking, service discovery, etc. If you read the linked blog post, they actually explain this at

I still don't understand the "cheat". Any well-designed app that wants to take advantage of larger screen sizes on the new iPhones to display more content will use autolayout and the new size classes (compact and regular). Th

This isn't correct. If you've ever resized an application window in OS X, it's likely that you've used autolayout. iOS has the same functionality. In addition to a flexible layout system, iOS has the concept of size clas

I don't think you really understand how iOS works. iOS uses points as its units, not pixels. One point on a retina display is two physical pixels. One point on a non-retina display is one physical pixel. To create a one pixel thick lin

I don't use Evernote much anymore so maybe this is already possible, but it would be cool to see all of my todo lists in all of my notes in one place (maybe with the note name as the heading for each list).

I'm curious, what part of Meteor will be a requirement for future web development? Are we not already building big distributed, interactive web apps without using techniques that Meteor introduced?

Google Cloud Endpoints supports iOS, and I'm not even sure if Impraise is using Cloud Endpoints. Pinging impraise.com shows that they're using Amazon Elastic Beanstalk for at least their web app.
