"What was the name of that song I shazamed while visiting Amsterdam? Ah, here it is." Location is massively important in searching for a memory. I will forget the dates I was in Europe, but I will not forget that I was there.

The problem in this case isn’t centralized App Stores. It’s software that relies on a centralized server. If Skype we’re still P2P, then maybe it could evade the Great Firewall a bit easier. But it’s not, and China will just ban the Skype

Yeah, these days it's easy to use an online service to submit to the App Store. Buddybuild (buddybuild.com) is really helpful for this. It acts as a CI system, and it can deploy builds to iTunes Connect with one click.

I agree. I was responding to someone who thinks that will be commoditized by "auto parts companies". Whether or not that's true, safety is the most important component of the user experience of a self-driving car. Once that&#

Apple is an example of why your last paragraph likely isn't true. It's about the end-to-end experience, not the parts that compose it.

Why was the transition to HiDPI so much less painful on macOS, then? Because Apple designed the core OS to handle it much better, and make it easier to support for developers. (which was years in the making, far before the launch of rMBP.)
