Correct; but I've seen many uses of Kafka that NATS could totally be used for. For example, load balancing across subscribers (use a NATS queue instead of a Kafka consumer group). NATS doesn't ever store messages persistently; but

I really love a lot of the software under the Hadoop umbrella, but so much of it assumes a static deployment on bare metal hosts, it's a struggle to use it in "modern" setups (HBase, for example; I miss my old friend).

Oh hell yeah! That's great news, tons of work went into this -- props to the contributors! I will take the opportunity to say that Kafka is kind of painful, with or without ZK. Check out NATS! [0]. It doesn't solve all the same

That fact that calling a function on a type does not inherently dereference the pointer seems...nuts. Do gophers routinely check if the pointer is `nil`? If the function does not utilize the pointer (like your example) and so avoids an erro

That makes total sense -- I guess that's one of the things the Amazon Go stores are trying to solve.

I don’t understand the purpose of the Item Availability Model. If you’re getting inventory updates from a store at least once a day, can’t you use a more simple approach to stock prediction than a machine learning model? I.e. they can calcu

This really goes to show, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Yeah the guy could probably overhaul his entire approach to system administration, but also...this works. Well-placed hacks are maybe my favorite thing.

I don't think the "problem" here is bad search results -- I think the lack of clicks is thanks to search results becoming much richer. The "card" style answers that show up more and more often mean I don't have

Not considering async/await (because I'm not really a fan), they're neck-and-neck in my opinion. I don't think C# has been as careful with its abstractions and the general aesthetic of the language to the degree that Jav

I think the default branch name change has been good for the ecosystem; “master” didn’t always make sense for whatever workflow was used, and it was hardcoded all over a bunch of tooling. I think “main” makes more sense, regardless of polit

Woah! I guess having a drivers license is more necessary in most of the US, so they’re more easily obtained? That’s wild.

Driving school wasn’t required, though you can take a “driver’s ed” class in high school to skip the exams at the DMV (you take them as part of the class). The exams are free (IIRC), you just have to pay to get the license when you pass. Yo

1,500 for a drivers license?? I had no idea. It cost me about $30 USD to get my first license in Alabama. Washington state does taxation differently so I think it was about $120. You learn something new every day!

Whether or not anyone "deserves" the money is probably not really your problem (in an org chart sense), and I think you should be happy with whatever "excess" you or the candidates are receiving. Don't internalize t

I can't help but wonder if reviews should just be eliminated. I don't have a guess as to how Google would handle that. But for something like Amazon -- surely it would be easier for Amazon to vet the products they list than to vet

Couldn't agree more; but some people are genuinely, staunchly opposed to making a phone call. We all have our crosses to bear, and I'm glad that particular one is not mine. I find a 30 second phone call way more appealing than fut

Interesting idea, but I don’t think that’s a gamble any of the current clouds would make. The business is by nature a long game, so a few years of increased profit followed by <danger> doesn’t seem like it’d be enticing to a cloud. Be

Agreed; I have pretty limited time to spend on personal projects, so I try to minimize the amount of "infra" I have to maintain. I'm an activist about some things, but running my own git remotes and CI isn't one of them.

I'd suggest caching the result of a query that could return multiple pages, if consistency is truly important. Otherwise, I don't think it really matters which option you choose, as long as you document the behavior. Edit: obvious

I went hiking last month in Yakima, WA. It was a beautiful day and I got to the trailhead at about 9 o'clock. A hundred steps or so up the mountain, I pulled out my AirPods case...and it was empty. I can't describe the panic, then
