As a statistician, and collector of statistics textbooks, the iPad had made my life (marriage) much better! I can download all the books I want, and have a (typically) better reading experience on the iPad, and I don't need to expand t

I'm a self-described Bayesian* at my day job, but the author needs to do better to convince me that the Bayesian approach is worth it in the deep learning space. As far as I can tell, deep learning folks don't give two shits about

Not for me. I have to track changes in a document through the whole editing back and forth. And I have special org templates.

There is a difference. Distributions are tested in practice, for example, by using a goodness-of-fit test. Often if the hypothesis of normality is not rejected, people think this implies normality.

Distributions are only assumed. There is no such thing as truly normal data or sampling distribution.

Further, those assumptions are only necessary for confidence intervals and hypothesis tests.

I'm on the opposite site of the fence, but I'd love to hear some specifics on how R is ill-designed and encourages buggy programs.

Why would a user need a 12gb gpu to run the game locally? The deep learning model is already trained, and I can’t imagine one needs a gpu to just evaluate the model.

You can fit a basis function regression model with least squares.

Interesting. The lecture notes don’t look like point estimation and there’s not much hypothesis testing. Course seems much more probability than statistics.

I grew up in a small (30k pop) city in "rural" Missouri and had no idea when I was going when my parents drove me around as a kid. I got older and started slinging pizzas and learned every nook and cranny in the whole town. This w

Interesting, but it suits the marginal user. Ideally, I'd want to analyze my typing patterns to tailor to that (that is, a Bayesian solution where I can supply my data)

You can argue either way. dividing by n is the maximum likelihood estimator, but dividing by n-1 is the unbiased estimator. Depends on what you like. Most people prefer unbiased estimators when they are available.

You are correct, eqn 9 is technically wrong. But it is traditional in PCA to de-mean the columns of X.

That's basically what I do. I don't let my TV connect to the net. But according to this twitter thread, that doesn't matter much, as my Roku is regurgitating my data all over the place anyway...
